I’m helping my daughter with her sax improvisation. She’s just done her DipABRSM and plays in a big band weekly where she improvises. I’ve got an honours degree but jazz really isn’t my thing, so my husband who also plays, and I are learning along with her. Can anyone recommend anything she should be doing other than this.
- she’s listening a lot.
- she practising her scales and blues scales etc.
- she is improvising regularly.
- she’s doing lots of standard technique work.
- I’m taking her through ‘jazzology’ slowly and trying to learn with her.
So is there another good book or some element she’s missing? She’s self taught but seems to be doing okay, but may do more improv for Licentiate in future. She’s in year 8, so going to a university etc isn’t an option.
