Is this a reference to Edinburgh's nickname The Athens of the North? The word "round" fooled me into thinking it was an anagram. Or does Scot refer to the first name Ian?

(A Scot went round, at that time a capitalist)

Aha - TEAMS + THY (for "your old"). Very clever!

I'd always thought of a gable as being more of a roof feature than to do with walls. Presumably "bolstered top" gives the B, hence B + GALE

What's the French connection? Something to do with BON?
