If anyone is interested in starting out, or developing their (piano) improvisation skills then you might be interested in this free four week online course run by Sam Richards and Lona Kozik, who are composers, pianists (specialising in improvisation) and ex-Dartington lecturers.

More information here:-

Or for those in a hurry here is a link to the page where you can apply to join the course.

It would be good to see some basic information about how the course runs and how much time it takes? I know this is a piece of strings question, but just to know, say, there's one hour-long video each week on youtube, or whatever, would be good.

The plan is to run a short live demonstration session around twenty minutes to half an hour (but available afterwards too), probably on a Monday, with exercises to work on during the rest of the week. I'm not sure how the Q and A aspect will run just yet. The reason the course is free is that is a beta test version, so a good opportunity to learn some new skills as well as offering feedback from your own course experience to fine tune the final version and subsequent courses.

Hmm...thinking about this. I've always been scared of improvisation, so although I can't say I'm keen, perhaps this is a good chance to pick up some skills. Do you know when it starts, BadStrad?

Edit: Sorry - I see now the date is included!

I loathed improvising when my teacher first thrust it upon me, but it has been so useful to all my playing, that I'd say give it a go. You've nothing to lose. :)

Me too. I was thinking initially of pointing the Boy to it, but now I'm thinking I should give it a go myself. I've always wanted to be able to improvise.

Super, thanks for that, I just signed up!

I did have to google 'beta test'! :) My vocabulary just got expandulary!

Misterioso (and anyone else) - For me, the best intro to improvising (that is, the least cognitive, least threatening, and most musical) has been Forrest Kinney's Pattern Play and Create First series. Especially because in Create First, each piece has youtube offerings of how he approaches it. Not that I wish to disrespect in any way the course I am about to embark on which may also be wonderful...

That solves my dilemma too. Really, why do so many people run things on FB!

He did say, it was for this round that they're using Facebook. This round is free, because it's the pilot study. Presumably, if/when they run it as a paid course, they may set up their own chat forum, but I presume that's an expense for them.

It looks like the course has just finished, and enrollment is now open a full 8 week course at £249.

I'm curious, did anyone complete the beta-test version, and if so, how did you get on?

I did just email Sam to ask if Facebook use is still required. One might think after paying a fee of £249, that they might be able to provide their own sharing facilities.
