Sorry to hear of your wild weather, Misterioso.

An update from Oz:  various places have received rain which is very welcome, though the far east of Victoria and far south coast of NSW, which have a bad time with fires, have missed out so far.  However rain for those areas expected in next couple of days.  Further north NSW has done better including on fires west of Sydney.  Even far north-west NSW and poor old Queensland are having various bands of rain passing through.  Best falls many drought-stricken places have seen for a long time, though not enough to break the drought.

Now there are worries about ash and debris from fires washing into dams affecting drinking water supplies and authorities in Sydney are putting up barriers to contain the problem. Water treatment plants will have to work harder.  Also ash washing into rivers can lead to oxygen deprivation and has resulted in at least one big fish kill.

Anyway, just here we've had a little rain but need much more.  A storm or two has dampened the otherwise active little fire closest to us (it's only about 2,000 hectares) so on our last update today it hadn't spread closer to us in the last couple of days.  Four helicopters plus ground crews are working on it and more reinforcements will be sent from Saturday.

This evening the wind really whipped up and didn't seem to know where it's coming from but is quieter again now.  Smoke haze has been hanging around but better just now - we've opened the doors!    We are getting used to the smoke smell so don't notice it so much.  We'll wonder what the funny smell is when we get really clean air again!

Well. Yes today we had some dumps of rain. The air is crystal clear now. Things are calm here but many people further north are in shock and without drivable cars or electricity. Our suburb just missed something very nasty. Think golf-ball sized and frozen solid.

Gaia is not happy!

Lovely sunshine. Snow on the mountains. Blue lake.
But a bitterly cold wind direct from Siberia

Ha.

Today we have damaging winds fanning flames in many places.   Authorities are particularly worried about grass/mallee fires starting in western Victoria.

A new grass fire just east of here quickly got into a plantation forest yesterday afternoon and was threatening parts of a neighbouring town.  Probably caused by some idiot motorist flicking their cigarette ash out the window. Quickly acted on and brought under control before these wild winds started but who knows how it will go now?  And then -- we are half expecting a dust storm later this afternoon.  Lovely!

Postponing my shopping trip.

Update and a correction

1) Weather now? Not too flash

2) No that fire which is probably just now burning down part of a large neighbouring town was started by a branch brought down onto power lines.

The cool front which caused so much mayhem today has passed through so it’s calm here again. Some showers and lightning with it. Though emergency alerts were issued and it looked really bad for a while, homes in the neighbouring town have been saved so far and that fire is within containment lines. However some fires are still out of control on NSW south coast with a few more homes lost.

Then we had news that a large water bombing plane crashed this afternoon killing three crew...

The nightmare just continues doesn't it. And in addition to the lives this disaster has already claimed comes the plane crash you mention, OA. Such a tragedy. And yet my OH remains haunted (as do I) by a TV report showing a koala bear surrounded by trees on fire and appearing to stumble further into the inferno. A picture can be so powerful.
Following this but feel very helpless.

Thanks for your thoughts and concern mel2.

Weather-wise here it’s actually a very nice day today. Was it all a dream?

Weather is a fickle thing...
