Someone mentioned the Croydon music shop. I’m not sure it’s worth the journey from central London - 

20 minutes on the train, followed by a bus ride of about 10 -15 minutes, depending on traffic. They do have some sheet music, but it’s relatively small.

I’m the one who recommended it. When I was there one day last year in the summer of 18, I found that there was a lot on sale.

I thought much of the B & H stuff in Regent St North moved to a shop in Wigmore St, near the Wigmore Hall, think it was Brittens or similar. Has that gone now ? Also what happened to Cramers which wasn't far from Trafalgar Square  (?Tottenham Court Rd?) 

 

Boosey & Hawkes @ Britten's Music in Wigmore Street is long gone. I think it's now a furniture shop. Cramers are now a mail order business in Watford. According to the Wiki entry on Cramer, their shop was in New Bond Street but closed in 1964 (a bit before even my time!).

Cramer's moved to St Martin's Lane, where it was a regular student haunt - it was the only place that gave us discount!  I remember the kindly manager, Mr De'Ath.

99 St Martins Lane, now Starbucks. Apparently they moved there from New Bond Street in 1965 and stayed open until around 2000 (although I don't remember ever going in, despite presumably walking past on many an occasion).

I quite like Schott in Great Marlborough Street (close to Oxford Circus tube). It used to be handy for Boosey & Hawkes nearby, but I have a feeling they no longer have a shop and just do mail order.

Certainly some of the staff that were there when I was had probably been there since it opened!

As already mentioned, Kensington Chimes is good for piano music, as well as other music, and I like to have a bit of a browse in there when in the South Kensington area (there are also branches by the other conservatoires too). My main gripe, and I'm afraid it's a biggie, is that they do insist on having music playing in there which is a complete pain when you're trying to hear music in your head.

Would those foam ear plugs that squidge into your ears be enough to block out the background music?

Overheard in our local music shop recently - a lady had travelled from London to Cambridge to it. (Not town centre, but get off at Cambridge North station, and walk less than 10 mins to Cambridge Pianoforte.  They have a good selection of piano (and other) music.

 Possibly! But not sure about cutting out the noise of over-enthusiastic personnel and customers as well!!!
