Nante Cathedral is currently burning. It appears that the great organ has been compleltely destroyed. The first reports say the fire was probably deliberate as there were three starting points, one close to the organ.

It appears that the smaller organ is also badly damaged.

Dreadful - spotted the fire on the BBC News site. Why on earth would someone deliberately destroy something like that?

The latest news is that the fire is now out and the removal of rubble and the investigations can start. It is now being said that the fire may have been started by electrical faults. There were three places where the fire started but it seems they all were points at which there was some electrical  equipment. I think it will be a while before the experts know. It is very sad. The organ builder (it was resotred in the early 1970's after another fire) and the organist spoke on BFM today and were both very upset.

This morning I learnt that a man is being held by the police but it seems that he is a voluntary helper at the cathedral and they are checking anomalies in his timetable. The origins of the organ go back to the 17th century. It survived the French Revolution and WW2 bombing and the last fire, after which it was restored and updated; I don't know a lot oabout organs but apparently it was thouçgh to be one of the finest in France. the platform on which it was built has been fragilised by the fire. I have no doubt the will sort that and rebuild the organ. But it is still a historical and musical treasure gone for ever.

However, it was reassuring to hear someone on BFM - I missed who it was -  say from the heart "You can't have a cathedral without an organ." I don't think you can have any church without an organ - and organists!

The man who was held in custody was released, then arrested again and has now confessed. it seems he is a Rwandan refugee who has not managed to get permission to stay in France and is under orders to leave the territor. He is afraid to go back to Rwanda. There is something very sad about this. There will be an investigation into his psychological state. If he is found to be of sound mind he risks 10 years imprisonment.

That is so, so sad, at so many levels. That someone could find themselves in such a mess that they'd contemplate doing something like that. That so much history and beauty has been lost. But thank you for the update, Aquarelle.
