I am sorry to post that Julian has passed away at age 87.  Maybe the best guitarist theres ever been.  RIP

Very sad news. I don't know if it's true but I did once hear a story of how the guitar was so frowned upon by the Royal  College of Music - not a proprer orchestral instrument - that as a student he smuggled it in and practised in the basement.

Sad news indeed. Saw him play to a packed audience in Leeds, around the mid 80's. It was such a privilege.

Bream's obituary in the New York Times mentions the story, so I think it is probably true. Bream was twice asked not to bring his guitar into the RCM, which he had entered to study piano, cello and composition. Eventually, the principal (probably Sir George Dyson, back then) asked Bream to leave his guitar at home - Julian Bream left the RCM instead.

Just came across him now thanks to your post. An excellent guitarrist indeed. R.I.P Julian Bream.
