You have to remember also that a piece one person finds easy another person will find hard. It depends on what your strengths and weaknesses are.

As others have said your mother teaches piano and presumably teaches you so she is the best to advise you. I do agree about choosing pieces you like though.

I just sat G5 piano after many years of no piano, crossing my fingers it worked out, still to hear.  I am practising a grade 6 piece (the little ballerina) because it's a lovely tune, but not sure if I will be able to do grade 6 in 2020 as I've never sat a theory exam, so maybe 2020/21 for my next practical  :) unless I manage to rattle on with theory, which is unlikely

Im planning on taking grade 8 violin next year, not sure if ill sit it in the spring or summer though. Scales are almost secure, just need to work on slurred bowing. A piece mostly learned, B piece learned but needs a lot of polishing, C piece mostly learned. My biggest weakness is aural tests

I am going to chuck myself in the deep end by entering for cello grade 3. Only started cello in the summer but it’s coming along fast and I love it - helpful that I understand the music - just getting my head around how to do all the technique stuff really well. Oh and aiming for DipA in the summer - piano not cello! It’s gonna be a music-filled new year!

I'll be taking the theory Grade 5 at some point (probably Spring/Summer) and then likely follow up with practical Grade 6 (piano) come the end of the year. Still early days but that's where my thoughts are at the minute. Anxious to find out my results now for G5!

I'm in a similar place, Peter. Took grade 5 tenor trombone on the 5th of December and now anxiously awaiting the results. I plan to do grade 5 theory in the Spring and grade 6 trombone practical later in the year. I hope I make a better job of the scales next time, which fell apart during grade 5 - so much more difficult than on piano, which I also play.

I'll be taking Grade 7 Theory in March, and the ARSM diploma in May.

My ARSM programme consists of the following:

  • Bach - Prelude and Fuge in F minor from WTC I, BWV 857
  • Beethoven - Sonata in E, Op. 14 No. 1
  • Chopin - Mazurka in C# Minor, Op.50 No.3
  • Debussy - Bruyères (Number 5 from Preludes Book II)

I've been working on this programme since May of 2019, and one of the Beethoven sonata movements since May of 2018 - and I still can't play that movement as well as I would like!

I'm starting to wish I had picked a different sonata and perhaps a different Romantic piece.  I'm not worried about the Bach or the Debussy - they're both fine.  But the Beethoven and Chopin are kicking my butt.

I hope I never have to play another mazurka as long as I live.

Good luck everyone in your up and coming exams. I’m hoping to take grade 8 piano in 2020. I’ve been preparing for the grade 8 trinity and abrsm exams since jan 2019 I’m not far off but should be ready by October/November. I’m going to aim for June/July but looking at it realistically.
