....And do they think the people who fork our for them have a 10% increase in their salaries each year?

For years I have been apologising to parents for how expensive these exams are. As far as I am concerned, the AB has lost much of its credibility as an exam board. For the few candidates I am likely to have in future, I plan to use MTB.

Far too expensive.

I'm also planning on using MTB from now on and will only use ABRSM if a student particularly asks.  It's been a somewhat shoddy service the past while from ABRSM and increasing their prices is just greedy.  I've used them for students over the past twenty years, but it's time to change.

Needless to say I cannot possibly ask any of my families to pay these amounts. I have been subsididing them for years but this is beyond a joke. I too will be taking  my custom  elsewhere. They are just not worth it.

Parents notice the larger increment more than we do because their child is going up a Grade AND there's the annual rise.

So the fee for the 10-minute prep test is now greater than the fee for an entire GCSE music, despite the fact that the latter includes listening tests and questions on set works, as well as assessment of compositions, in addition to solo and group performing. Is the board trying to commit corporate Hari-Kiri ? :o

I wouldn't mind betting that the examiners are not getting a 10% pay rise.

I have heard it said that those who push for higher  fees are the ones who benefit from the board's annual surplus - i.e. the Royal Colleges, whose principals make up the actual board (excluding the Royal Welsh, who the others are continuing to keep out for fear of diluting their own receipts). They'd be very foolish to price themselves out of the market, though.

Well, if that is the case,  my little lower Grade pupils will not be contributing. The Royal colleges can look elsewhere. Actually my first reaction when I saw our prices was to think that the Board actually do want to price us out of the market as they have no interest in Europe and would like to get rid of us. If that is so I have been taken for a ride over the last few years. I have subsidised entry fees, from my own pocket (considering it an investment for my business), from the generosity of our local rep who has always given me something out of her own pocket for the work I have done - again reinvested for the pupils, and from the sale of programmes at our annual concert. Only for the past 2 years, of course, we haven't been able to have one. Well, enough is enough and I am not going to play this game any longer. I have always considered the exam fees to be  too high and that some of the money was being used for unnecessary schemes instead of getting on with the basics of providing a fair and affordable  examining process. I appreciate that the music colleges need money - but not at the expense of the children whom they should be regarding as the audience for their future professional musicians. I feel gutted about this. I entered my first candidate back in the late 1960's so have done a long haul with the ABRSM. Enough said.

I would really like to see a breakdown of what % of the exam fee goes where. We can all understand that costs rise, especially with the added expensive plague testing, rising transport costs, etc. But I feel we customers are entitled to know what proportion of the fee goes to the core purpose of providing the examination system per se, for which the board was originally founded, and what to supporting the colleges, scholarships, musical projects worldwide and all the other things that you see on ABRSM's home page. I can't find such a breakdown anywhere, maybe someone can enlighten me. It seems lacking in transparency.
Is it all these added projects that we are paying for?
