I did the Rehearsal Orchestra Edinburgh course this year which I really enjoyed. I must say that I have heard good things about NLMS so I think I will have a tough choice in 2014.

I'm going to the Speed Dating for Strings (!) course at Benslow in March and might also do the Baroque course in May.

The English Camerata course sounds fab, v tempted by that! Has anyone else been on it?

Can I also recommend Lowri Blake's cello courses in South France
I went this year in September and it was a wonderful experience. Not sure I can afford to go again this year but will definitely do so at some point in the future.

Cello course in France duly added, lubylu. :)

As Benslow seems to be a special favourite with Forumites, if people want to recommend specific courses in particular, I'll put them up.

I have been on the English Camerata course for the last two years, and really enjoyed it.  It's not really a course as such though - the best way to describe it is that there's a lot of fluidity to each day, so that you can get the most out of your stay.  If you want to play from dawn to dusk, you can.  If you're not part of a preformed group, then you will be matched with other players who want to play similar pieces, and you may well find that you play with lots of different people - this is one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much I think.  If you go in a preformed group, then of course you will stay together.  Even though I was probably one of the most inexperienced people there (about Gr 4 cello the first year, about Gr 5 last year, but I haven't taken the exam), I was made very welcome, and tremendous effort was made to enable me to play as much as possible.  I liked the chance to play with wind instruments (I play in a string orchestra at home).  I got lots of practice sight reading.  I learned a lot from the coaches & tutors.  The food and accommodation are very good, as are the music facilities.

I can't compare it to any other courses though, as I haven't been on any.  I'd go back this year if I could, but finances may not allow it.

Thanks for the additions notmusimum and lornawaters - I've updated the list in the first post.

On the web sites I hunted down for your suggestions, notmusimum, there don't appear to be any dates set yet for 2014. If you find out about them and I haven't yet updated the list, give me a prod!

Katica, don't know if it's just me, but whenever I click on any of your links I am taken back into this page.

Most links work okay for me except the Benslow one which takes me back to the forum home page.

Oh dear! :( :( :(

Some work and some don't.

Yesterday when I was updating the list the whole thing suddenly disappeared. :o

Fortunately I had copy-pasted the list elsewhere just in case, so I just copy-pasted it back in and re-did the update. (Rather annoyedly, I must admit, especially as it looks as though I may not myself make ANY of these courses this year.  :crying: )

Something must have happened during the copy-pasting. I'll re-check all the links.

I think the links should be working now. It turns out it wasn't ALL my fault - a couple of the sites weren't working or had been changed.

Has anyone been on Benslow's Intermediate Piano aimed at Grade 4-6 level.  I did Grade 4 in 2012 and just passed and am now slowly working up to Grade 5 in the next year or so.  I get very bad nerves playing in front of other people.

Any thoughts/views would be appreciated.

The British Kodály Academy is running another 'Conductors and Singers' Spring Course this year (April 7th-10th).   Last year it was lovely to have Splog, AnnC, Express Yourself, benjaminja there (I'm sure I've missed someone off ) and erstwhile forumite rosfrog was teaching for us for the first time.

He's back this year, offering workshops on a variety of topics as well as individual singing lessons.   One participant remarked last year, 'That half hour was worth the whole course fee on its own!'.

Full details are to be found here:

We're at a new venue this year - the Hayes Conference Centre near Derby.   We're all very excited at the thought of en-suite double rooms with tea/coffee-making facilities (the accommodation last year left rather a lot to be desired...).

If anyone has any questions about it, please drop me a PM.   It promises to be a lovely few days :)   We have some truly amazing tutors including the incredible László Nemes (Director of the Kodály Institute) and Sue Hollingworth, well-known in the UK choral world.   We're all looking forward to a bit of barbershop, too :D!

The Early Bird rate (£100 off the regular course fee) ends on 24th February!!
