Which snog item had you worried? Have you heard Nigel Kennedy's Elgar Violin Concerto? Oh my what a soul! I am totally serious!

 

Also, can I add to my "avoid" list Schenkerian analysis (my musicology lecturer looked aghast when I pointed out that this was just a process of reducing great symphonies to Three Blind Mice). He hadn't seen it like that before. We didn't entirely get on!

 

And to my "snog" list Abba, the Welsh, Italian and Russian languages, the Irish Sean Nos singing tradition, the Radio 4 shipping forecast (still thinking - more later!)....

Snog: the list varies depending on whose composition I am currently fascinated with but at the moment is John Ireland and Gian Carlo Menotti. Past entries have included John Williams (the film composer but I think his last good score was Jurassic Park), Korngold and Stravinsky.

Avoid: Liszt and Khachaturian (but to be fair, that is based only on my assessment of his Violin Concerto which is 45 minutes of my life that I would like back please, several hours if you include the rehearsals for it we had to trudge through).
