The sailor one is tarsi and I think the building material is Portland slate.
What's a tarsi?
Portland stone fits with the O of GENEALOGY. That leaves three clues remaining:

working upwards litmus and alliance, but the arthropod really ought to be a horseshoe crab. The book is octavo. I can't get body mass index out of my head but can't work out why it would be? I'm sure the blood vessel should be vena cava??
