Well, who thought Liverpool could overturn that 3-0 first leg defeat to Barcelona to reach the Champions League final? I certainly didn't...

And now Tottenham have staged a comback of their own, coming back from 2-0 down (3-0 on agg) against Ajax to draw 3-3, scoring the 3rd in the 96th minute to go through on away goals.

So the Champions League final will be an all-English affair for the first time since 2008.

Yet we could also have an all-English Europa League final too, with Chelsea and Arsenal both in contention to progress.

So Chelsea and Arsenal will contest the Europa League final.

So we could have a situation where Arsenal - who are currently 5th in the Premier League - could deny Chelsea a place in the Champions League if they win the Europa League. But then if Tottenham finish 4th and win the Champions League, I wonder what would happen then...

Play off  semi for Tranmere v Forest Green tonight.  One of Tranmeres bogey teams, a loss to them a couple of weeks ago scuppered any chance Tranmere had of a direct promotion spot.  Season before last they got promoted in play off at Tranmeres expense.

Later Edit.....Ooh  goody !  A goal up and FGR have had a man sent off !  Id like a minimum of 3 goals now

Well the amazing title battle for the Premier League title has been won by Man City, beating Liverpool by one point!

Here are some stats from the BBC website from this high-scoring battle:

- City's haul of 98 points is the joint-second highest for any team in English top-flight history (converting to three points for a win) - only the Citizens themselves have ever earned more (100 in 2017-18).

- City have won 32 Premier League games this season - equalling their own record in the competition from last season for most wins in a single campaign in the competition.

- Liverpool became the first team in top-flight history to win as many as 30 games and 97 points in a season and not win the title.

- No side has ever previously lost just one game in a top-flight season and not won the title - the previous record was also held by Liverpool in the 2008-09 season (two defeats, finished second).

- Liverpool's tally of 97 points would have been enough to win the Premier League in all but one of the previous 26 seasons of the competition (2017-18).

And the form between the top two and the four teams below them was quite contrasting!

Tranmeres 1-0  win  over FGR was disappointing given they were playing 10 men much of the time.  Second match tomorrow. Winner will play Newport or Mansfield who are playing second leg tonight.

Later edit, it will be Newport County.

Second leg FGR v Tranmere has reached half time.  FGR scored early, but James Norwood has equalised, so were still a goal up .  If we pull this off there is only Newport between us and a second consecutive promotion.   Pity away goals rule isnt operating  as wed now have an extra advantage.

Later , 15 mins left now, and FGR have a man sent off as in the first leg.  I gather Premier League referee Mike Dean is watching the match, he lives down the road from me and is a Tranmere supporter !

yay.gif yay.gif Match over.  Its Tranmere v Newport at Wembley  for promotion to League 1, and a second consecutive promotion.  James Norwood has now scored 32 goals this season.

So Derby are Wembley bound! Looks like the game had it all - goals galore, 2 red cards. Villa should be trembling...

Good luck to Derby. I was lucky to be able to support them in one of their rosy periods when I worked at nearby Spondon for a while, but as a patriotic Yorkshireman Id rather Leeds had won last night !

Reverting to Tranmere this is their third consecutive Wembley play off final.meant to mention this earlier.

Congratulations to Charlton.  I'm feeling a little bit torn for the L1 playoff final.  I would like Charlton to be promoted for Barry, but I would also like Sunderland to be promoted because it is good for the region when all the North East league teams are doing well and I would like to see them back up again.

Pulis went this morning!!! biggrin.png woot.gif hurrah.gif party1.gif yay.gif party2.gif laugh.png

The best thing that's happened for us all season.  There will be lots of parties on Teesside tonight (although it's nice and peaceful in my little valley).  I am a happy Boro fan today. wub.png

There's going to be a lot of forum interest in terms of Wembley finals, with Watford, Derby, Charlton, Tranmere and Orient all due to play there!

The Sunday Times Sport section today has an article devoted to Tranmeres ace striker (and all leagues highest goal scorer this season) James Norwood. They will have a job keeping him. Hopefully Tranmere will beat Newport next week and get a second successive promotion.
