Good news !  Was he named after actor Yul Brynner ?  I suspect not,as he was completely bald !

Yes he was - because of "The King and I". He does now have a rather large bald patch on his tummy! He has been out in the garden this morning though hasn't gone very far - mostly snoozing near the kitchen door. The other cats are ignoring him - probably because he smells of the vet.  However  the dog is is being quite solicitous!

Completely and utterly off topic - Yul Brynner was not really bald, but his skull was shaven for the role of the King in ‘The King and I’. He had Swiss citizenship from his Swiss father and was citizen of Moeriken Wildegg, which is where we used to live. He visited the place in 1967 and there is a Yul Brynner square there. There are still other Bryners living in the village. He was officially permitted to add the extra ‘n’ to his name in 1965. He changed it, so I read, because English speakers pronounced Bryner ‘Brainer’.

Brynner has now had his stitches out - it took two vets plus me  to do the job! He is on a second lot of anti-biotics, eating well but hasn't much energy. He is making progress but it is rather slow.

I am sad to tell my cat loving forum friends that Brynner has lost the battle. After  a brief remission he began to deteriorate. This accelerated and I knew that he couldn't recover. I planned to take him to the vet yesterday morning but was unable to make morning surgery. So I decided to go in the afternoon but the Brynner went out into the garden and i found him fast asleep in one of his favourite spots and I hadn't the heart to wake him. When I came back from a concert yesterday evening (more of that on another thread) he was worse. So this morning I took him to the vet who was in complete agreement with me that there was nothing else that could be done and no point in prolonging the suffering.

 

He slipped quietly away while I stroked him. I had the impression that he was thankful. In fact I think he had gone after the first injection, though the vet did the second as he has to follow the procedure. I signed the cremation convention and came away with an empty basket. I'm very sad but I know it was the right thing to do. I checked his medical records as I had a vague recollection that there was some uncertainty as to his FELV and FIV status as the test results were not very clear. I suspect that FIV finally raised its ugly head.

 

So we are now back to four cats - I never got round to changing my signature when we went up to five with the arrival of Grey Puss. We still have Edwin, who I am convinced is Brynner's brother - they arrived together - both with certain Siamese characteristics.

I'm sure Brynner was thankful - I think it must be a comfort to have a familar face/scent/touch/voice around in those last moments.
