The Bulletproof Musician suggests
"Consider taking a break from New Year’s resolutions this year, and adopting a new habit instead. You might find it easier, more interesting (even fun?), and likelier to stick."

I probably won't keep them , but here goes:

My main aim this year is Grade 6 Theory.
On the piano - lots of technical work & trying to get a bit of speed into my playing.
Sight reading - at least 10 minutes 3 times a week.
Aural - a miracle please

And I'd really like to do an adult forum event. If not in 2014, then a commitment to one in 2015.

I want to get to a reasonable standard of playing on the Sax and save up for a Soprano.

I want to start working towards LRSM singing performance
There, I said it
The aim would be to take it either July or December 2015. As I'm currently without a teacher and would probably have to come back to the UK for it there are certain logistical issues to overcome.

I always make the same all-purpose resolution, which is "to exercise my will-power".
Musically I am currently trying to practise fewer pieces as I always have far too many on my play-list.

A bit late to the party, but...
1. To get back into the habit of playing regularly.
2. To brush up my theory. I was actually fairly decent at that, once upon a time, but have forgotten most of it. I think quite a bit is hidden in some inaccesible corner of my brain.
3. To buy and listen to more recorded music, of various genres. I've got out of the habit recently.
4. To go to more live music. Ditto. We go to see dance a lot, and opera or musicals occasionally, but have not been to very many concerts or gigs in the past year or so.
I've made a good start on 1, 2 and 3. As for 4 - everything I've got booked is still dance and opera. I need to find some live music I fancy.

Hello!
2013 is almost over, so I thought I would set personal goals for the 2014. As many of us know, most new year resolutions fail by the third week of January!
To avoid that, I have decided to publicly announce my musical goals for 2014 in this forum. This way I would try a little bit harder!
My musical goals for 2014 are:
1. Learn FOUR full works for Clarinet - it could be anything (concertos, sonatas, trios, quartets etc.) as long as I could play it cover to cover at an acceptable tempo with sufficient musicality (Grade 7). I am thinking of Weber variations, Finzi Bagatelles and two other works (yet to decide!).
2. Learn to play ALL major, minor scales and arpeggios at least at Andante tempo.
3. Learn trill and alternate fingerings (for better intonation) for all the notes between Low E to top G (fourth G).
4. Attend at least THREE forum events or festivals (to improve my public playing).
5. Spend at least 280 hours of DELIBERATE practice (7 hours x 40 Weeks!)
These are my goals and now I have to follow it through!!
I invite all of you to set your own goals and declare them here! I will resurrect the thread in June 2014 for a "mid year review" and then again in Dec 2014 to see how many of our goals have been met!
All the best!
It's nearly July and I almost forgot to update this thread.
I have been sticking to my goals a lot better than in the previous years.
1. Full Works - I have been making reasonable progress. I have played two movements of a Krommer concerto, one movement and a bit from teacher's Sonata and single movements from assorted pieces. Hopefully, I should be able to meet four full works target if I choose pieces carefully!
2 & 3. Scales and Trills - Not a lot to report!
4. Events - I have done a festival! I am thinking about another festival and a forum event. Not sure if I should count an exam as an event?
5. Deliberate practice - I have been a lot more consistent in this. I have started a practice journal and have been religiously recording my practice times, progress etc. I average about 4.5 hours a week.
I have another five months to go!
