Hi All

So far I've taken practical exams up to grade 5, and will need to take the theory exam before taking the next grade ohmy.gif

I've done no theory before unsure.gif !!!

What's the best way to prepare for the theory exam? How long will it take do you reckon?

Thanks biggrin.gif

Well I'd recommend you get hold of a few theory workbooks (maybe start with the Grade 3 one) and work through them up to Grade 5. Then, if there's anything you don't understand, find yourself a theory teacher to explain it.

As for how long it will take, it depends on your efforts and the amount of time you're prepared to spend on it.

Also depends on how much you have taken in during your practical lessons.

I studied my grade 3 and 4 theory at evening classes. I recommend you buy the AB guide to music theory book part 1 (grades 1 to 5). Also buy your self previous exams sheets to see what you know or don't know.

It all depends on how hard you are willing to work. I've got my grade 5 in March, except I don't know if I can because i might be in Spain when the exams are on.

I cannot recommed hightly enough the book, 'Take Five - and pass first time.'

I did. Give it a go; it's a very helpful book, good explanations and excellent examples.

Do you do music at school still - my GCSE teacher offered to go through the workbooks with me. The ABRSM workbooks are pretty good. I started at grade 3 but only took the 5 exam. After I finished GCSE I did the work with my piano teacher.
