Strings do break, frequently! Strings are completely interchangeable and if you have a violin that arrived with factory strings then changing the whole set would be a good idea anyway. They are easy enough to put on.

I think you should take the whole outfit to the nearest strings specialist and ask THEM to do it for you. If they have the strings in stock they may even do it there and then for you and may not charge you as you are buying the strings from them. It's easy to do but if you are unsure it's best left to those who can do it blindfold!
My daughters violin strings were 'tatty' and her teacher suggested changing them. I took it into a 'strings' place, and they changed them very quickly, and the difference in sound was incredible.
I agree with 'elidatrading', you might want to get the whole set done 'while you are at it' - it's like guitar strings which I'm more familiar with - when one goes, it often is a sign that they all need changing - and getting a whole matching set makes a lot of sense.
So don't panic!
