Assuming you are working on your own and not with a teacher, where do you find the answers to the exercises in these workbooks?
Lizzy violin
As far as I'm aware there aren't any.

I assume it's partly a ruse to keep teachers employed.

You can usually work them out ok from the AB guide if it's grade 5 or below.

Past papers are good as you can get answers to those

If you're looking for a theory book with answers, try Theory Time.

If you mean "Theory in practice" then there aren't any 'answers' printed as such.
AB release past papers with model answers for each grade though, I think 3 or 4 sets per year. They are easy to buy, I get mine from music-makers online as they don't carry a P+P charge. I'm sure they'll be available in music shops though - I live in Cyprus at the moment hence the internet shopping!

Thanks for the replies.

I have the AB Guide to Music Theory Part I as well as the First Steps in Music Theory books so I can find all the answers I need, but just wondered if model answers were published for these workbooks.

No matter, I have a set of G5 past papers winging it's way to me together so they should be good for practice. And I also have a complete set of G5 material on the way. Now just have to make up my mind how long it will take me to go from scratch to G5 so I don't try and sit the exam too soon but don't hang around either.

I gather you're G3 on piano so you'll probably already know quite a bit. Would two months be too soon? The next theory exam (UK) is held on 6 November with the closing date being mid-September - the ABRSM web site has details. I don't think they've published the 2009 schedule yet, but the Spring session is likely to be held on a date at end Feb/beg Mar and the summer session on a date in June.

Strictly speaking I'm not G3 on Piano as I haven't taken any exams at all.

With my workload at work just now 2 and a bit months would be a bit of a push, and I'd like to get a good mark so next Spring looks like the best bet for me.

im also learning theory by myself, learning grade 3 at the moment. haven't taken any exams yet though. This would be my first so I'm preparing myself extra.

and i bought the AB Theory In Practice Book, as well as the other AB theory books I could learn from. The First Steps to Music Theory and the AB Guide to Theory.
I'm pretty good in the theory stuff, except for note groupings but I couldn't check my answers.

I found this really helpful (about the Theory Time book).
I think I might buy it real soon.
Thanks MUCH smile.gif

I've looked for these past paper answers but do they only do them up to grade 5?

I am sure they do them up to G8. Can't access many web sites at the moment my computer is going really slow and won't let me on at all most days ( hence no posts in a while!) but look on ABRSM publishing and you'll find out.

Yes jay77 is right, the AB introduced model answers to the 2007 papers for the upper grades. There's a link to ABRSM Publishing from the Home page of the ABRSM web site, or you can get them post-free from music makers

Yes, they do them right up to Grade 8.

I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere on the forums in the past, but can anyone recommend a book for Grade 5 to 8 and higher? I find the first AB Theory book okay -just, but the second one is so dry!

Steve, I've revised the list in the first post of the "Theory of Music Books" thread to make it clearer which books are recommended for which grade - it's a starting point anyway.

That's a great idea! Thanks.
