We need 2 pieces for an NCO audition in October...

What good ideas do you guys have? I am tidying up my music room and seeking inspiration but would appreciate ideas VERY much also!

I would recommend Chanson de nuit as it is a slow piece.

Then to contrast try something a faster like handel's volin sonata in f: 2nd movement.

Chanson de nuit is slow and a beautiful piece but it's on the grade 6 syllabus and i'd say one of the hardest in it - because the majority of it is all on the G string and there's soo much shifting. If i'm thinking of the same chanson de nuit as you that is laugh.gif But it is a really, really nice piece

On the grade 5 syllabus i looove Tambourin by Gossec. Really happy upbeat piece and isn't too hard whilst still sounding impressive biggrin.gif

Those 2 would be a good pair of contrasting pieces smile.gif

Chanson de nuit is slow and beautiful but can ctually be played entirely in 1st position.

My teacher played it for me with the shifting however told me to learn it in 1st and then add some shifts in later.

Tambourin by Gossec is a nice tune but not one of my favourites.

I love Mozart Bagatelle: German Dance, K. 600 No. 2 a lot. This would be worth considering.
I love Glier Romance even more though.

Basically I have reaised that the grade 5 book has a lot of delightful pieces that cna be used for your audition.

It can be played in first position obv but it sounds nicer all on the G i think biggrin.gif Not that i can play it nicely all on the G string haha

Here's a recording of Tambourin http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nq5worEFqF4 i love it biggrin.gif

I like C3 too 'Buskin'. Here's another recording biggrin.gif http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zfqYSAywx0Y&...feature=related

Along with the grade 7 syllabus i think that the grade 5 syllabus is my favourite - i agree with violinhero there's loads of nice pieces in there biggrin.gif

The Grade 5 pieces are good I agree but I want to avoid them...

We've been looking at an arrangement of Summertime (actually from the old red AB Gd 3 book) as well as loads of other stuff.

SHORT is important for this audition also so that discounts some pieces.

BTW I think Chanson de Nuit is hard for an average 10 year old even if he is Gd 5+!

Tambourin is fun...

I agree it's probably better to avoid grade pieces as everyone will be playing them - sorry i didn't think of that! >_< And yeah not only is chanson de nuit too hard for a 10 year old (although he is g.5 + - wow!!) and i don't think it'd like... suit a 10 year old either. I dunno, maybe i'm being silly laugh.gif

The arrangement of summertime sounds awesome biggrin.gif I love that song. The sounds of that also reminds me of music technoloy AS - i did a big band arrangement of summertime for one of my arrangements laugh.gif

OK we are decided I think!

We like Summertime very much so that's staying. Shifts and varying flavours of vibrato are coming on well.

And for the fast piece we have Hungarian Dance no 5 by Mr Brahms. Some nice bowing to show off in this as well as tempo changes.

Slightly niggled that both are in G minor and it would be better if they were different keys but the Brahms has a major bit in the middle so I guess that will do. Always a good thing anyway for violinists to show they can play B flats and E flats beautifully in tune!

Could you not transpose the Summertime one to give a contrast of Key?

Yes BUT it sounds good in G minor!

And the shifts are nice too...

I'll have a go though. Good to get the boy to do more second postition muahaha.gif
