I seem to have put myself in for grade 8 theory this Autumn.....



Guess I'd better do some work for it now.....

I am thinking of trying it at some point, but haven't made up my mind if it should be this autumn or next spring. The last day of entry for the October exam is coming up, and I haven't looked at any of the past papers yet.

My only reason to take the exam is to see how the harmony and counterpoint questions are marked, in case I get to prepare students for the Grade 6+ exams.

I was thinking of entering meself for it but I'm not sure.

It's always worth taking the plunge, you'll be amazed at what a little bit of pressure can do to your powers of concentration...

After taking (and passing) Grade 6 in the January session (some years ago), I was persuaded to try for grade 8 ... in the June of the same year. It was a mad dash to the finish with loads of cramming but worth it in the end- no harm done (well not to me anyway, my tutor might disagree there ) and I passed too.

In January, I told my teacher I wanted to be entered for it, as i'd been working for it (ie going to lessons and chatting for 30 mins) for a year, and i wouldn't do it in the summer (AS's) and not in december (UCAS, general busynes). So it was pretty much now or never, and I had 6 weeks to do pretty much everything.

Anyway, I passed with 77 so it can be done.

Not just at the moment - still basking in my gr 6.

I was kind of thinking about grade 7 but not until next year, and after having a look at the past papers - or maybe that would be a bad idea.

Good luck with it though, and enjoy the swotting. Who needs sudoku?

I didn't do theory so I guess I'm about grade 5 standard...

I will do it one day, but it looks like this autumn might be given over to Grade VIII piano instead.

I'm thinking of putting myself in for this.. although i can't find a decent theory teacher so i would be teaching myself most of it. This is fine but the composition bits annoy and frustrate me!!

When are the exams (for ABRSM). I've been on there site and it says for theory theres one in Nov, Jan and June. Is that all of them beucase i swore there was one in sept/oct?

I'm working through the material, but not sure when would be best to enter myself for the actual exam, probably spring or somewhen...it's been years since I sat a theory paper and a little scared...wondering if I should sit 7 first as a kind of warm up or just be brave and sit the 8 lol!
