I never did German at school, but have picked up a fair bit. However there are some of the Chorale preludes, the translation of which I am not so sure. Some are obvious, like Nun Danket alle Gott, but what do these mean (Some are full titles, some just phrases from titles) :-

Edit, just one more, one of Karg-Elert's Choral Improvisations is the tongue twister 'Herzlich lieb hab ich dich' which I played for ATCL in 1965.

Ok, my German's a bit rusty nowadays, but I'll give it a shot. I'm sure somebody else will do better!

Gelobet Seist du = Praised are you
Lob Sei dem allmaechtigen Gott = Praised is the Almighty God
Lobt Gott, iht [ihr?] Christen allzugleich = Let all together praise our God
O Mensch, bewein dein Sunde Gott [gross?] = O man, bewail thy many sins
(Der Tag , der is so) freudenreich = The day is so joyful
(Herr Jesu Christ) dich zu uns wend = Lord Jesus Christ, come to us
'Schmueke Dich' [o Liebe Seele] = Deck thyself my soul with gladness
'Erbarm dich mein' = Have mercy upon me
Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein = Now be joyful, dear Christian people
'Herzlich lieb hab ich dich' = Heartfelt love have I towards you

Thanks, yes there were a couple misprunts 'Sunde Gross' indeed, and 'Ihr' for 'iht' !
I'll probably think of a few more at some stage

Loben means to praise, not to love. So most of the sentences where Holz Gedeckt has put love need praise instead, e.g. gelobet Seiest du means You are to be praised,
Lob Sei dem allmaechtigen Gott means Praise be to almighty God, etc

To love is lieben, so the last one (Herzlich lieb) is translated correctly as love.

Ach, BerkshireMum, Ich liebe dich....!

Joking aside, yes, you're absolutely right. I'm surprised I made such a basic mistake! Serves me right for doing things in a hurry.......
