Is any one else going to the Oxford Cello School (adult school) this Saturday?

No - but I've been three times to the Performance course. Amazing teachers, and I had a great time.

Have you been before?
Charlie Cello
No I'm not going either but it sounds very interesting. I wasn't even aware of it. Do they cater for all abilities? Did you have to prepare music before you go?

No, I haven't been before. I rang the organiser for a bit more information about what happens during the course, and it sounds as if I shall need a rest when I get home! The day starts at 8.30 am and finishes at 6.15, with various activities like technique, masterclasses, orchestra sessions and choir, as well as two private lessons included. I've put down for Alexander Technique too (optional extra) - that should give me a short stress-free breather!

It sounds as though you enjoyed yourself, Cellocase. I'm nowhere near the lofty heights of the Performance course, having passed Grade 4 last March.

Yes, Charlie Cello, they do cater for all abilities, both adult and children. The only thing you have to prepare is material to work on in your private lessons, unless you fancy being a victim for a masterclsass. You can even take AB exams there if you want, and there are other extra optional sessions for grade 5 Theory and grades 6, 7 and 8 aural. This year they are introducing an improvisation course which is open to musicians other than cellists. Have a look here for information.

I'm really looking forward to going (complete with compulsory home-made cake!) biggrin.gif

I returned from Oxford cello School last night after an exhausting but very enjoyable five days - I would recommend it to any cellist who has both physical and mental stamina! Students on both the Adult Improvers and Performance courses took part in the orchestra sessions (check in 10.00, first orchestra session 11.00 ohmy.gif ) and there were also small ensembles - five or six players of mixed ability, with carefully chosen music and a tutor present at each practice. The course finished with an informal concert with three orchestral pieces and one item from each of the ensembles. Everyone had two private lessons from one of the large staff of very experienced professional cellists (see website if you are interested). There were also Alexander Technique, Choir, Improvisation and Video Technique sessions. Accomodation was basic but adequate and clean and food was excellent. Course members were very friendly and may had come a considerable distance. One of my ensemble had travelled from Kirkwall in the Orkneys - by ferry, long distance coach and bus, and she wasn't a youngster! I haven't had so much exercise for a long time - walk before breakfast at 8 am as I couldn't sleep after that, going from room to room, some well apart, lugging cello etc up and down stairs and through very resistant fire doors. The website for next year goes up in September. I'll be enrolling again!

Ahhhh, nostalgia! It's a great course, and I've learnt an awful lot there. I'm going on an Ancient Greek course, though, so I wasn't able to go this year....

I hope your cake went down well smile.gif

Perhaps next year? Yes, cake went down fine, as did all the cakes!
