Hi

Can someone help me? You know when I have to write in the key signature for a piece of music and I am asked to insert the tonic after my key signature - is there a rule to follow as to where I should position my tonic? i.e. If the key was F Major, should my 'F' tonic note be written high on the stave or low? Is there a rule to follow?

Many thanks.

i would put it on the first space, as that would seem logical to me, so you dont have to draw ledger lines etc (that is if you have to write anything else)

however i dont think there is a rule

Thanks - so you don't think you would get marked down in an exam if I, for instance, put the tonic note on a low line/space and the examiner's notes showed it on the high line/space? As long as it's in the correctly named line/space - do you think that would be right?

I don't have a teacher, I'm teaching myself.

Thanks again.

You would not get marked down as long as it is sensible.

For treble clef I would start on middle C and then the next tonic note above that - that way you use the least no of leger lines.

Thanks very much. Feel much better about it now.
