other than the famous preludes and fugues, have anyone played the following?

Le Tombeau de Titelouze and the Paraphrase on the Te Deum
fsharpminor
Sorry , most of his stuff is beyond me. sad.gif Do enjoy listening to it though, particularly 'Symphonie Passion'

I must say I was disappointed when I went to the cinema to see "You, me and Dupre" and expected a two hour masterclass on some of these works... It didn't turn out quite as I'd imagined...

Le tombeau de Titelouze is a nice collection. I have read a few of the pieces at sight; some are quite manageable. One of them is on the ABRSM Grade 5 list.

I was just looking at the score of Variations sur un Noel, which doesn't look as scary as I had imagined.

that's nice to hear. i really want to play some music by dupre (another te deum, prehaps) biggrin.gif

OK Maybe I'll get 'The Tombeau de Titleouze'
There are some good recordings of Dupre on the inexpensive Naxos label. The one particularly which has the 'Variations sur un vieux Noel' 'Three P & F's' and 'Symphonie Passion' is excellent value for a fiver.

...actually it's on the Grade 6 list (if I can't get my hands around the Messaien for grade 6 I'm thinking of having a crack at Te lucis ante terminum instead smile.gif ).

Symphonie-Passion is sublime. I learnt 'Resurrection' for Easter, and will no doubt learn 'Nativite' for Christmas on that basis. Need to start soon though, it takes it out of you!

With Dupre you have to be careful that you find the 'good stuff' - he's the opposite to Durufle, published a lot of arguably questionable material. I can't help but wonder if publishing less would have increased his reputation.

Nice piece for you to learn would be the 4 versets on Ave Maris Stella... they're not fiendishly difficult (the last one excepted perhaps) but give you a wonderful insight into his 'sound-world'

i'll see what my organ tutor says about it, but will definately learn the 3 preludes and fugues the coming year (not all in one go of course). i'm quite a nutter sometimes, insisting on learning really hard and crazy pieces that i love (the demessieux te deum is an example, i guess)
daveinnorfolk
It's not crazy, it really enhances your technique.

When i was 12 i learnt Carillon de Westminster - i still think it caused a massive change in the way i perceived organ music, as it taught me so much discipline and technique that i still use to this day

I rather like Carillon de Westminster. In fact, this is one of several pieces of Vierne that I want to tackle in the coming year. Maybe it's because I am from the other side of the ocean... tongue.gif

Some observations:

I play a little Dupre and there is some very playable stuff around. I haven't got copies to hand, but if I remember rightly, I think the T de Titelouze is supposed to be a volume that gets progressively more difficult, so the ones at the start of the book are easier and straightforward.

There is a nice little piece called 'Lamento' written for a Glaswegian organist which I play and use for Lenten voluntaires, not too hard.

The antiphons on the Magnificat have some playable movements.

I did buy a copy of one of the lesser P and F, the one in C I think as it was on the FRCO list, but decided in the end not to go for it. Personally, I didn't think it was as rewarding as say the G minor.

If you're wanting recordings, the Naxos series are OK< but the best ones are Jeremy Fillsell's on Guild. THey are a little more pricey, but well worth it.

I love Dupre. The variations sur un view noel is a classic modern organ piece, as is the symphony passion.
I can play the piece 'Te lucis ante Terminum' but I dont really like it.

By the way - I cant stand the Carillon de Westminster either - Its too common for me. When you say your playing something by Vierne, in my opinion, people expect you to say....'I am going to play the Carillon de Westminster', or some other well known piece
Wouldn't it be nice if you chose to play a piece by Vierne that nobody really knows, thus it kind of suprises them as its not what they are expecting.
But aside of Guilmant, I not a big fan of French Romantic organ music - Now, Modern French organ music....... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Le Tombeau de Titelouze is an excellent collection. I regularly use lots of them as voluntaries.

The Paraphrase on Te Deum is great - plenty of drama, and not too difficult, compared to some of Dupre's output.

The Suite Bretonne is a pleasant work - full of imagery and nostalgia. The central movement is rather tricky, but the outer movements aren't so bad, especially the Berceuse. Makes a great alternative to Vierne's!

I'm currently learning the Suite which is a real killer.
