Hi

When auditioning, is it safe to say that most pieces on xylo should be played with rosewood sticks??

the pieces in question are

The solo from Young persons guide to the orchestra
Porgy and Bess introduction
Alexander Nevsky (arise ye russian people and alexander's entry into pskov)

also

has anyone had experience playing Rimsky Korsakov's Cappricio Espangol on snare drum?

How would one play this unaccompanied (I am meaning the huge roll that occurs during I think its the trumpet solo part)??
Thanks
Micky

They don't necessarily have to be rosewood just something hard enough to produce the classic 'bright' xylophone sound (basically anything except metal!). For the snare drum excerpt it could depend on the person taking the audition. They might conduct the diminuendo for you, or they might just leave you to it, in which case I would suggest holding the forte for about 8-10 seconds, diminuendo, and then piano for as long as seems appropriate.

Hi,

Thanks for advice Wideball, I meant hard sticks when talking about rosewood. Its just because thats what I have I just refer to them like that.

And thanks for adviceabout the roll.
