Hello. I have been enjoying some of the movements of this suite (especially the Forlane wub.gif) but wonder if I am doing the right thing by trying to use recordings of the orchestral arrangement to inform my playing rather than listening to other performances of the original, piano version. The reason is I came to this suite through a CD nearly 20 years ago and just find the whole thing completely ravishing. I have therefore tried to bear it in mind when performing it on the piano but just find myself getting frustrated. Does anyone else have similar experience? Thank you.

No, I can play a few bits of it - not the Toccata though..

I don't give lessons, I think I need them though if I am ever to do a piano diploma..

Hm I've had a few goes at it, but all I can play 'properly' is the Minuet , and the Fugue (moderately). OK and maybe parts of the Toccata. I think the Forlane was once set for Grade 8, but it is very awkward in places. The Fugue was also Grade 8 , not too long ago. The other Ravel piece Id like to be able to play properly is the Minuet Antique (also been Grade 8) again its awkward rather than really difficult, but it always beats me.
Best piano recording I know is the Double CD of Ravel Piano Music by Pascal Roge (Theres also a nice Poulenc double by him aslo)

The Menuet Antique is my all time favourite piece. wub.gif I have a flute and piano version, where the flute part alone is classified as Grade 8. ohmy.gif

I had a go at the minuet from Tombeau a couple of years ago, but, as with most Ravel, it's just too awkward for my small hands to move between the chords. sad.gif I'd love to try the Forlane someday.

I have the Pascal Roge double CD as well. wub.gif Fabulous playing (as is his version of the piano concertos with the Montreal Symphony and Charles Dutoit).

Ravel orchestrated it himself and an orchestra by its nature has wider scope for expression than a piano, so if anything I'd say the orchestral version would give you MORE of an insight into his intentions.

Thank you Rosie - my thoughts exactly. Ravel is such a lush orchestrator; it really adds a completely new dimension to the suite I believe.
