After joing the senior string orchestra in school, I had the urge to begin lessons as teaching myself, i felt, had reached most of it's advantages by now - I'd prgressed past grade 3 and was looking for so proper professional tuition. So, I had my first lesson today and I must say it went extremely well! Not only did my (very pleasant) new teacher think I could even go in for a grade 5 (!) exam, she was impressed that the trechnical basics had all been learnt with very little to comment on.
I wanted to make this post (not to enlarge my ego! but) to ask if anyone else here has found that after learning the piano or any other instrument for that matter, has taken up a second and found such quick progression? I really love the violin and orchestra - I'm very glad I took it up now!

Yup, I'll agree with that! The first instrument I started on was the clarinet, which I progessed with really quickly anyway, but I then took up the violin and within four months had already passed grade 3. I subsequently went on to become a professional violinist.
About 7 years ago I also took up the oboe - and progressed at a phenomenal rate.
I guess all of us could put it down to previous musical knowledge, but I believe a bit of natural musical talent is also helping us out.
Good luck with the violin!

Thanks for the replies - I agree with you, and I really do enjoy the violin too!

I took up the French horn a year ago as my sixth instrument, and was playing Grade 3 stuff within three weeks! I'm now about Grade 5-ish... I'm still not so great with all the technical stuff... it's really hard, but I guess I'll get used to it!
I agree, progress is made a lot faster on second instruments (although the piano still takes a long time to learn... lol...)
