Full Version: When Will I Get My Violin
Forums > Viva Network > Viva Strings
ilovebunnies
I was thinking of a thread to keep me company while waiting for delivery of my violin (has to come all the way from UK ). In my previous thread (waiting for tomorrow), Noodles and Rosfrog have jokingly tried to bet who will get it right, i.e. when will i have the violin. So i thought why not start a thread with anyone who'd like to keep me busy while waiting and guessing my delivery day right! The Violin was posted next Mon from the UK to Malta. Both Rosfrog and Noodles however were wrong as i did not get it yet (they said by Wed and that's what i was hoping for... sad.gif ) What do you say, here the parcel system works as follows, i.e. if there's a big package the person receiving is to receive a notice informing of the arrival of the item. than the person himself is to collect from the post-office. Till now i did not receive the said notice. What do you think? When will i get the notice? Whoever wins the bet will get ............let me think........ nothing! well whoever wants to take part would have made my waiting more bearable. So anyone, THANKS and please post!

If I recall correctly, I had to wait about one and a half week for my viola to ship from the UK to Norway. I think you should try to be pessimistic. It's better to be pleasantly surprised when your violin arrives earlier than expected than to be disappointed day after day when you come home and find your mailbox empty, isn't it?

My guess: You'll receive your violin on July 2 (Wednesday next week).
lottie
My guess is Thursday (next week) ...but I really have no idea... hope it's soon though laugh.gif

I remember it was agony waiting for my violin from Liz and it only took two days to order it and have it arrive but then I didn't live too far away.

And it was such fun opening the parcel - I could hardly wait to tune up and get playing laugh.gif party1.gif (It was so pretty too that I bought a special cloth to wipe it after I played it each day rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif )

Ahh, sorry about that. I thought you were in the Uk - have just realised you're in Malta. Might be Friday or Monday then. Hope you don't have to wait too much longer.

I'm getting a Gliga Genial 1, i'm a beginner and i only had two lessons till now, so for a beginning it should be enough. I've had my lesson cancelled this week sad.gif cause my teacher is quite busy, so nothing to do but wait for the violin wub.gif to arrive, this waiting is testing my patience though!

Don't worry. i hope it will be either tomorrow, fri or sat. As long as it is this week it's ok. i really cannot wait any more!! about my location, thinking that i was in the uk, does it mean that i have a good written english? (mind you, i should cause English is our second language after maltese... smile.gif but i do get a few odd mistakes every now and then ph34r.gif )

the british shipping service has pretty much ground to a halt, and infact although i hate to sy it, all instrument exports to other countries (even EU ones) have been halted, as people were selling cheap stringed instruments, caked in Rosin, which actually turned out to be cocaine.
So youve probably got a good two week wait, as all the intruments are being unpacked and sniffed by Dogs.
there are some clever people out there... who would have thought of doing that.

This is not related to what i intended for this thread. and not everybody does those things you're referring to in Malta. These things are done in other countries too. Many keep and love them as pets like I do! And this is surely not a place to raise a controversy. we're talking about music and musical instruments here.

I'm really sorry I truly didn't mean to cause any upset. My parents had friends (they died a few years ago) from Malta and the people there are really lovely.

It's ok, don't worry, thanks for your apology. i'm sorry for being hard but i don't want to feel uncomfortable writing here cause i really love this forum. And also, i'm pretty anxious and nervous these days. i'm losing losing hope day by day that i'll see the violin soon. I'm quite disappointed actually. I'm having to go to lessons without having on what to practice so there isn't any improvement from one lesson to the other. And i'm really eager to play! However, please feel free to write.

Thanks Noodle, and yes i'm waiting too much for the vioin. it's the first thing i think about when i wake up in the morning: "maybe today". It just keeps me going. It's my fixed target for now. I know how you feel I've been waiting for things in the post too recently. Liz is very good and she will have posted it at the earliest opportunity. Could you do some aural or general musicianship in your lessons whilst you are waiting? At least that way you are doing some prep.

Sometimes good things are worth waiting for. My daughter waited months for her Baritone Sax to arrive from Hanson (it was a special order). She did have one on loan, that wasn't very good, it's made her really appreciate the new one.

Fingers crossed it'll be with you today or tomorrow.
Maizie
I'm sure it'll arrive soon.

I'm very bad at waiting for things once I've ordered them. We all know how long these things take, but there's always the little flame of hope that they might not.
Last time I bought something online, I was told it was sent by Parcelforce 24 - hurrah, next working day delivery. Only, they actually sent it by a different method via a completely different company, so it actually turned up in 5 working days. On the other hand, I didn't mind, because Parcelforce just take things miles away back to their depot and I have a really hard time getting them to redeliver, whereas the company they did end up using just left it securely at the house. So it worked out in the end but it was very painful having to wait for it...
jod
I've had stuff from Liz before, and she is very reliable. So I'd stop worrying. She would have done everything right from her end.

What you are waiting for are the vaguities of International Post, which, speaking as someone who sends parcels to my niece in Spain, can mean delivery times are as long as a piece of string.

She gets my parcels eventually, and you will get your violin eventually, just as soon as the Malteese post system gets its act together.

I know Liz did everything right, i'm not exactly worrying now just anxious to receive it. Nothing in the post today too (not even a piece of paper with publicity!!!) the postman just went to the other side of the street and never got back to our side, so tough luck for today too. I don't think that it's the Maltese post that's keeping it just not sure if it was actually sent from Uk since like another post suggested, every parcel is being checked in detail for any abuse. Will keep you posted. fingersCrossed.gif for tomorrow!

Thanks notmusimum, i quite appreciate your comments. however, this week has been not so nice - musically speaking - since my lesson got cancelled to, so i'm not even able to play some notes on a violin (like i was doing). But the highlight is that i'm starting rehearsals for a choir that prepares about 10 performances every other year in October and all the proceeds go for charity. But, maybe cause i'm not in a very good mood, i don't really feel much like going and some of my friends dropped out cause they cannot spare time for rehearsals and everything. Well, i'll try to enjoy myself as much as i can till i have the violin.
jod
If you are concerned it is being held up by customs, why don't you contact them?

QUOTE(jod @ Jun 27 2008, 03:12 PM) *

It's not customs, it has nothing to do with that but someone earlier posted that "the british shipping service has pretty much ground to a halt, and infact although i hate to sy it, all instrument exports to other countries (even EU ones) have been halted, as people were selling cheap stringed instruments, caked in Rosin, which actually turned out to be cocaine. Maybe it had to be delayed because of these searches. That's what i'm concerned about. Customs fees and anything have nothing to do since both our countries are EU members. However, i'll just keep hoping day by day for now.

I was trying to get you to think it wouldnt be there for ages, so when you did get it, you would be surprised, i was trying to help you be pessimistic.

Update, i've got the parcel number and checked it out. then i phoned at the post office as i thought it had arrived to Malta. But, it was a false alarm. It was sent from the UK only yesterday. So it has been at the UK post office about a week for NOTHING mad.gif !! but however, it should be here next week. It is planned to arrive to Malta today but till now, no update, and i don't think i'll have any update during the weekend since the post office will be closed. But at least i have an idea of what's happening. I'll keep you informed. next week's going to be pretty exciting i think! by the way, the choir rehearsal was ok, there are a lot of new choir members this year as many from the past years have opted not to join sad.gif but it's going to be fun as well smile.gif Any more guesses? someone had mentioned Wed of next week. Anyone else?

Give it a week, best case scenario and two weeks worst. To take your mind off things, start planning all the accessories to buy once you get your violin e.g. mute, silk pyjama etc. and what name you are going to give your violin.

In the meantime, you could practise your bow hold using a pencil instead of a violin bow. Whenever I'm at work and miss my violin (and I know I'm on my own!!) instead of air guitar, I do air violin biggrin.gif

what does a silk pyjama have to do with violin? Do you usually give concerts in pyjamas? or a violin pyjama-party!!!!!!!!!! laugh.gif About accessories, i know i have to buy a stand for books, mute and shoulder rest. i was actually tempted to go and buy before it gets here but maybe it's not so much a good idea.

As for the air-violin, it's one of my favourite instruments as i never miss a note! Does yours work that well too? i'm above diploma level, believe me blink.gif ... reality shows i'm just a beginner. biggrin.gif ... aswith regards to the bow hold, i manage to get it right on a pencil but with a real bow, it's just too different also because of its weight. Will let you know if i have more news. I'm going to have a good night's sleep.gif now. bye bye.

Some more news, it seems that the aeroplane that had in it the shipment which contained my violin has landed on Saturday afternoon. However, the post office did not collect the mail yet!! And guess what, if there's no one to answer the door at the time of delivery, i'd have to wait for the following day cause i cannot collect on the same day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that' s grea blink.gif t! More days to wait. I cannot understand why they are so slow when there's not much distance to the airport. If only i could, i would have gone myself to the airport to get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes I am sat here at work, and five minutes walk away from me is a depot where I know a parcel is waiting for me - I've had tracking numbers and it tells me where things are.

But I have to let them drive it 10 miles to my house, where there is nobody in, and then they leave a card to say I can come and collect it, and then they drive it 10 miles back to the depot.

So the next day I get to walk around to the depot and collect it. It's silly but they won't do things any other way (and I can understand why!)

laugh.gif that's a good one too!!! maybe i should have given them an other address instead of mine. However, i'm going to keep on the lookout on the post office site, as soon as i see that it has been collected i will phone and ask if they maybe know the time of delivery so that i make sure someone is at my house to sign. I think that's the best solution for now.
