I'm ordering an electric violin on monday - yay! My birthday present happy.gif But i also gotta get an amp for it - will it work with normal guitar amps? :S I know nothing about music technology (concerning considering i just took my AS level music technology, though im positive i failed).
As in, this amp http://www.normans.co.uk/Items/15GA%20DR%2...%20Guitar%20Amp It's a stagg amp so i'm guessing it'll go with my stagg electric violin?

Sorry for my extreme lack of general knowlegde blush.gif laugh.gif I'm just checking before i go and buy it haha

Out of interest, are you planning on using the amp anywhere other than at home?

If so, then you will need to have it PAT tested. This is an electrical safety test that all equipment being used at venues, public, schools or otherwise, have to adhere to in order for the venue to be insured against electrical faults which may cause a fire, or electrocution of anyone attending.

A lot of aggro yes, but no PAT test, no play.
Scurra
Yes you can - just make sure the lead fits at both ends (into the violin and into the amp biggrin.gif )

What kind of electric fiddle are you getting?

Nice minimum summary of amps for electric violin. The most succinct description I've seen (if you live in the UK, the rest of the site would make good browsing too).

Son's classical guitar teacher says he thinks 30 watts is barest minimum for playing to any kind of audience - in a room or busking - so 15 watts sounds like a practice amp??? Curious to know what people's actual experience is!

Thanks biggrin.gif

And nope i'll only be using the amp at home - it's just a practise amp smile.gif

I'm getting the Stagg electric violin, in the blue/green colour. (Was so hard to choose between blue and pink laugh.gif) It's not expensive at like £120 but i only want it for fun and such. biggrin.gif

DO you have any style of music you particularly want to on electric violin?

Just curious smile.gif !

I'd love to try like, hip hop violin laugh.gif HAHA i'm sure that wont be successful but how cool is this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rxEl_izRxUo
I'd like to play more modern stuff on it tongue.gif Vanessa Mae stylie! Though i'm sure that'll be highly unsuccessful - wouldn't know where to start laugh.gif It's just for fun really smile.gif

I read somewhere that it's reccommended to use a bass amp for an electric violin to give a richer sound? wacko.gif

I have a 20 watt guitar amp used with a Yamaha electric violin. Although it is classed as a practice amp, I have used it successfully in church halls for dancers, with a keyboard, guitar and drum kit, and never need the volume up more than half. I put cotton wool in my ears and try to keep the others down to a reasonable dynamic level, so that we don't deafen people.

I've got a Silenzia violin, with a Stagg amp - the Staggs are very good, by the way. Nice range of tone biggrin.gif you can drop it right down to bass if you want

As so often with electric violin, I don't find this truly convincing (though I really love the shapes!). Getting the phrasing right for rock/pop music seems to elude most fiddlers. It should really be ballsy.

But THIS lady blows me away:

(Not bad shapes either - see http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=...ideoid=8371375)

And of course there's Jerry Goodman. violin.gif

There was a thread on this very topic quite recently - worth searching.

I remember Jerry Goodman with Mahavishnu Orcehstra - scary! Other rock/jazz violinists or bands, off the top of my head:

Don Harris (John Mayall, Zappa)
Jean Luc Ponty (Hot Tuna, Mahavishnu, Zappa)
Dylan Bates (Billy Jenkins Blues Collective)
It's a Beautiful Day
Curved Air
David Cross (King Crimson 1972-74)
Eddie Jobson (Roxy Music/Zappa)
String Driven Thing
Ed Alleyene-Johnson (see recent thread)
Mr [someone's] Cabinet (scottish rock string quartet)
Billy Bang
Regina Carter
Michael Urbaniak ( e.g. on Miles Davis' Tutu - yeah!)

And Scurra - consider yourself chastised, as your sig requests !

Edit: I thought the Lindsay girl was pretty good....though it's not really hip hop!

I got it biggrin.gif
It arrived yesterday
It's so cool! Though my dad wasn't very happy that i bought an amp haha. "I thought the idea was so you could play with headphones, not amplify the thing!!"
laugh.gif It's really fun though i feel bad for playing it, with poor Fidelio sat in his case ph34r.gif I'll play my proper violin later laugh.gif
Though i'm a little stuck for things to play on it. My classical grade pieces just don't suit it. =/

Not more chastising!

Try folk biggrin.gif

Yes, do biggrin.gif That was the reason I got my electric, to have some chance against an other-enthusiastic accordian player dry.gif That's all over now though and my poor little 'lectric's neem sat in it's case for moths now sad.gif I need a band!!

Anways, do try folk, but another thought - try listening to the radio/CDs and try just jamming along with them, it's pretty good fun until you find one in a ridiculous key rolleyes.gif
