hi. I am contemplating taking up the violin. Could someone explain to me what 1st , 2nd etc. Position is to me???

It means how far up the fingerboard your left hand is. The higher the number, the closer your hand is to your face. But I wouldn't worry about it if you're just starting, because it will be quite a while before you learn to move out of 1st position.

^ what primrose said. in 1st pos, your fingers are where they start, in second, your first finger is where your second finger would be in first position, in third, 1st finger is where 3rd finger would be in 1st posn and so on. But if you're only thinking about starting you really dont need to worry about that stuff.
