I was just wondering if anybody knows of any good Violin technique books. Because i just wanted a book which can remind me of different bow strokes such as detache, spicatto, ricochet etc. and other right and left hand/arm techniques.

You can't go wrong with Simon Fischer's 'Basics'. Or you could try 'The Art of Violin Playing' by Carl Flesch. Both are probably available on Amazon.

For bowing try Sevcik Op 2 or Casorti for the basics. Sevcik wrote a whole bunch of technique books (quite boring unfortunately). Schradieck is great for left hand for any standard of violinist. Flesch Urstudien I find really helpful as well.

I would recommend Simon Fischer's 'Basics', since it gives detailed descriptions of the techniques and some really good practice methods. Sevcik et al. does not describe the actions, it is assumed you already know exactly how to execute the techniques.

Just adding my voice in favour of Simon Fischer's Basics from a non-teacher's perspective. It is really well presented with lots of photos explanations, and great exercises. It is easy to find and dip into the particular technique you want to practice. I have found it a wonderful inspiration.

It is good and his more recent 'Practice' is also chocked full of helpful information on playing and practicing the violin.

Ooo thanks for the tip on the Fischer book 'Basics' - I've been looking for something like this. My copy came through yesterday (from the musicroom) and I'm delighted. Noticed the other book 'Practise' - how does it differ from 'Basics' - is it more advanced?

Anyway - I'm really enjoying what I've got for the mo.

Gracias

Argh Practice not Practise. Pardon me.

'Practice' does have some crossovers with 'Basics' but it also has very precise instructions for how to practise numerous passages from countless pieces, concertos etc. He's supposed to be bringing out a new book soon called 'The Violin Lesson' - I'm looking forward to it. There are also a couple of Youtube vids of him giving a master class (to a very sweet, stoical kid with her socks falling down around her ankles) but I prefer the books. Some people say he's too technical and he does come from the Galamian school, but his advice is very sound, technically. I find Flesch's book a bit more 'heartful', but use all three books as valuable sources of info.

Thanks V. I'll bear it in mind after I've absorbed a lot more of the Basics. Yes it is technical but I've already come across so many useful tips I don't find it a problem.
