Full Version: Tuning My Cello In Exams?...

At the moment I have a battered cello which is a youth orchestra one and sounds ok but looks horrible as it has been quite mistreated and is not the best of instruments, but I'm not allowed my own. I'm taking AB grade 5 in the summer hopefully but it's my first AB one, I've done music service till now. The problem with my cello is the pegs don't fit very well, so when it slips it is very hard for me to tune it again (It doesnt very often slip, just if I were to lean on it, it got knocked coming down the corridor etc.) From what I can understand, when I go in the exam room, my teacher accompanying me can't tune my cello. Is this right?

You teacher may tune your cello up to grade 5 - look here for the general regulations.

It's worth ensuring that you yourself are aware of all the regulations relating to your exam, including all supporting test requirements. Don't leave it to your teacher to tell you - even the most experienced teachers can get things wrong, as can examiners.

Yes, your teacher can tune your cello for your grade 5 exam.

Is there any chance the orchestra could provide you with a different cello. It would be in their best interests too if you had a better instrument. Wouldn't hurt to ask - especially at this time of the year when some 6th formers are returning music service instruments they won't be able to continue playing when they go to uni in September.

I don't know about getting a better one. Most people once they get to grade 5 get their own, I don't know any 6th formers who don't have their own and out of 10 cellists in the Intermediate Orchestra only 3 of us have youth orchestra ones and only one person has a music service (they only play a 3/4 size so aren't buying their own yet.) I'm in the 'middle' orchestra so am not really sort of on show in big concerts a lot either. Generally, I just go to my cello lesson one week and my cello teacher goes "I've got a present for you!" and then swaps my cello smile.gif. I've had 4 cellos in the past 2 years, this is my first youth orchestra one though. I guess I'll just have to wait about 4 years for my parents to buy me one.

Perhaps I'm over-simplifying, but would some peg paste help?
