Full Version: Cass Single Reed Day

barry-clari
Received my latest CASS magazine : inside there's publicity for this event, to be held at Kneller Hall, Twickenham, SW London, on Sunday 2nd November (the day after the clarinet quartet recital at Rotherhithe! biggrin.gif). There will be sax/clarinet/single reed choirs to play in, plus trade stands with all things single reed on them.

Hope this is of interest to the clari/sax players amongst you! smile.gif

Would someone be allowed to come just to listen, and browse around the trade stands? Don’t think I’d dare play anything!

Yes smile.gif . Though at these sorts of events, the single reed choirs tend to be enormous - and they tend to be well worth performing in, they're very relaxed.

Thanks Barry - I'm starting another thread about the RNCM saxophone day... BTW, does anyone know of good summer clarinet courses for a G4-ish player (me!). I can't do Harrogate or Liverpool, and am doubtful whether I'm good enough on clari for Benslow...

I received my CASS magazine today. Do you need to be able to play the sax to attend? Is it necessary to bring a sax with you?
TSax
It's probably a bit early for me to put this in the diary just yet, but a Sunday in London(ish) should be possible.

There will be plenty to interest you I should think, even if you don't bring something to play noodle. smile.gif

I'm going, unless I'm just too shattered after the clari recital the night before! smile.gif

It's going to be one busy weekend for the pair of us, that one...

I'd definately be interested, living in Lodon and it being half term.
Have you got any info you could send me?
Do you have to be good to play in the choirs?

I will also PM you.

I'm quite interested in going as I'm going to be staying in Rotherhithe that weeked, coincidentally!
I went to one a few years ago in Birmingham (my teacher at the time dragging a group of us unenthusiastic teenagers along) and was surprised to find I really enjoyed it!

Are you now?

Fancy coming to a recital with me and three other forumites in it at St. Mary's Rotherhithe on that Saturday evening (1/11)? biggrin.gif
Clare1986
I'll have to let you know...I'm meant to be seeing 3 different groups of ppl all in that weekend because it's my half term. Sounds good though smile.gif

If you want to come along to Twickenham, the closing date is on 20th October, and the application form you can find via the web link I've left on post no. 16 on this thread. smile.gif

Anyone else apart from Jo and I coming along? smile.gif

I'm going, and will be playing in the choirs.
I'm only around G4 - which I think is what they said was the minimum. So I'll be playing quietly smile.gif so no one will hear if I mess up.

Sounds like a good day out and I'm looking forward to it.
Hope to see some more forumites there.

See you there! biggrin.gif

Found an email in my inbox this morning about the event : looks like the choirs are being split into two (up to grade 6, and grade 7 and higher).

Must try to keep at least some money away from the trade stalls! laugh.gif

Hi Barri.
It sounds like you've been before so can you let me know - Are there ususally lots of 'shopping' opportunities? From the description in the e-mail & web site it didn't sound too big with more sax stuff than Clarinets.
Thanks

CASS events are usually pretty good for shopping opportunities, both for instruments and for sheet music. I think you'll find plenty that'll interest you.

See you on the 2nd! smile.gif

Just pulling this thread up to the top of the page again, as it's this Sunday.

To those of you going, see you there! biggrin.gif
tony_clarinet
Can you just turn up on the day or do you have to have tickets in advance? Mainly interested in the trade stands and all the goodies rather than playing.
jo.clarinet
I think you have to have booked in advance - and I've just had an email from the organisers saying that they're adding a couple of extra events as so many people have booked up! But it might be worth contacting them to ask....

You've had the same email as me Jo! biggrin.gif

I suspect they're full up - but it might be worth emailing. An added complication is that it's at Kneller Hall, which is the Royal Military School of Music, and as such it's military premises, and has security that befits such a place, so you definitely won't be able to turn up 'on spec'.
tony_clarinet
Had reply from organisers. Yes you can buy a ticket on the day but you have to e-mail car details (make colour and registration) so they can let security know. Alternatively you can park on the streets outside. But they are very full so it's going to be very crowded! Still got to decide whether the trade stands will make it worth while.

Trade stands at CASS events I find tend to be good. smile.gif

If you do manage to make it, it's well worth doing some of the playing sessions as well as browsing. smile.gif

Enjoy, wish I could be there this year.

Well, it was an absolutely fantastic day - a great mix of playing excellent music, concert items, trade stands and a clarinet 'clinic' held in the eating area - so you could have your lunch while listening to sound advice from respected teachers! I bought enough new music to keep me going for quite a while AND got four free pencils and a free calculator - yay!! smile.gif
hillyb
Sounds like a good day. Glad you enjoyed it smile.gif
barry-clari
It was a really good event, and Janet Eggleden and all the organisers and directors at CASS ought to be very proud of themselves. Hope they do another one next year! biggrin.gif

Plenty of stalls to tempt me (and yes, I was tempted!), plus some absolutely brilliant playing sessions. I thought it'd be a marvellous idea to volunteer to play two Paul Harvey solos, conducted by Paul Harvey, in the building that Paul Harvey taught in for most of his working career... ohmy.gif oops...

There were also some very interesting 'clarinet clinics', where eminent clari players gave hints and tips, on subjects as diverse as reeds, tone, multiphonics, altissimo notes etc. In one of these sessions, Victoria Soames said it'd be great to have more days like this. Saying things like that to people like me can be dangerous! laugh.gif

Anyway, it was a wonderful event, and I had a great time! yay.gif
