Hey, can anyone recommend a book of quite easy listening piano solo music to play in a restaurant for like hours....the pieces shouldn't take too long for a grade 7 pianist (thats what I am). I haven't got a job yet, or looking for one, but when I do look for one in a couple of years, I should be grade 8+ and I'd LOVE so much to play in a restaurant every night :-)

Hello Will,

I'm new, this is my first post - hello everyone smile.gif

You could try Quiet Classics. It's available at Musicroom.com:
http://www.musicroom.com/se/ID_No/056129/details.html

It was put together by a pianist who wanted music for exactly the scenario you've described.
It's all classical piano pieces. There are 4 sets of music in the book. Each set lasts about 20 minutes and the way they works is that, as you play through a set, the keys of the pieces work in a nice cycle so you can play 20 minutes of good classical (and rather quiet) piano music without having to flick through different books or having the key changes between pieces sound too obvious.
You can also start at the beginning and work straight through - that gives about an hour and 20 mins worth of music.

It's all nice stuff too, e.g. Chopin Nocturne in E flat op.9 no2.

wave.gif Welcome to the forum Rebecca!

That book sounds great I must have a look myself. I have played background music but it was a while ago and can't remember what I did. I know I used sheet music for some of it, but sometimes you can just get away with improvising around a few nice chords for a while to kill time wink.gif laugh.gif

Welcome to the forums!! smile.gif smile.gif

That book you have suggested looks like it's got some really great pieces in it! Do you happen to know what sort of level they are? Because I'm grade 6 level and am looking for some really nice pieces to play!!

Thanks

Hello All,

Thanks for the welcome! smile.gif

Hello Laura,

They're all original versions - no arrangements - and they vary in difficulty. At grade 6 I think you'd find plenty of stuff in there that would be suitable and also really lovely. I'm working towards grade 8 and I can approach quite a lot of it but some of is still too hard for me.

I bought the book because I thought the choice of pieces included was so nice and the format looks very useful. I'm hoping that I might get a slot playing background music in a local restaurant, maybe once a month when they have a special evening. It would be a really gentle way to get back into playing in front of people - you know, they're listening to the music but not taking 100% notice because they're there to have a nice evening, not listen to the pianist.
