Hi,

I have grade 5 theory passed with merit.

I was wondering if there would be any point in taking this tfurther

I know that only grade5 was needed for practical examinations but would there be any significant benefits of a higher grade?

Such as better chance of university entrance???

Please help

Does there have to be a point apart from just wanting to do it?
If you do decide to go on I'd start with looking over your grade 5 mark sheet to see if there was any particular area that lost you more marks than any other and follow that up by making sure you learn that thoroughly.
I'd aim to be able to complete a set of grade 5 papers with a mark of 90+ before moving on.

I know it's not specifically what you are asking but passing the higher grades might give you more UCAS points which may be of use to you depending on your academic achievements. smile.gif

Two really good reasons why you should take higher grades in theory.

1) not many people do it and so it looks really good if you have it and you will get more respect for it.

2) if you get a distinction in any of the theory grades 6 to 8 then the abrsm will send you a check. When I did my grade 6 I got 95 out of 100 and they sent me a check for £50 (although bare in mind that I took the exam at the beginning of June last year and I didn't get my check until 2 weeks ago).

Mmm, I think I might do some theory exams and make a profit: Grade 6 costs £29.90, so I'd "earn" £20.10. Those Hedy King Robinson prizes sound great!

Wonder how many times you could enter before they'd notice? wink.gif

I did my Grade 7 in February 2007 and only got my cheque a couple of weeks ago. I think they wait until the end of the year before allocating the money.

I think that there is an amount to be shared between all those who qualify in each year so they don't know how much each person gets until the end of the year.

I'm not sure any / many unis actually specify a higher theory grade as a condition of entrance, particularly if you're doing A-level anyway, but it would certainly help. If their choice is between Candidate X who has grade 7 theory and is about to do grade 8, and Candidate Y who only ever bothered with grade 5, it might well swing things in X's favour.
