I really love music from the romantic period with great love of Rachmaninov's work. I was wondering if anyone knew of any piano pieces by Rachmaninov that are of an intermediate level, I'm Grade 7/8 piano.

Any help would be great!

Yeah - check out the grade 8 AB syllabus - there's a Rach Prelude in F on there - not sure on the opus number offhand.

Thanks. Will do.

The Prelude op.23 no.6 in Eb, and the Prelude op. 32 no.5 in G are both beautiful.
They are probably considered post grade 8 level, but even if you didn't want to tackle them yet, you could always 'ear-mark' them for some time in the near future.

The famous Prelude in C# Minor op3 no2. It's the one thats heard a lot, but i really like it. smile.gif

Well Op 32 No 5 sounds and looks easy, but it isn't. It is neither fast not flashy, but those 5 v 4 and 5 v 3 rhythms are not easy, and you need to be able to play a very controlled pianissimo.

But the famous Prelude in C sharp minor Op 3 No 2 is the opposite of Op 32 No. 5 - it looks harder than it is!!

Relatively easy (for Rachmaninoff) are:

Barcarolle Op10 No 3. Rather long, but nothing horribly difficult in it
Melodie in E Minor Op 10 No 4
Moment Musical in D flat Op 16 No 5

There are no cross rhythms in the Melodie. The other two feature 3 v 2 rhythms which are easy to master, if you haven't done so already.

Some of the Etudes-Tableau are monstrously difficult, but Op 33 No 8 in G min is an exception, and a very beautiful piece when well played (unlistenable otherwise)

Romance Opus 10, no. 6. I have a Grade 7 pupil doing pretty well with that one. I thought it was a bit morose at first, and Rachmaninov wouldn't be my first choice if I had to pick a cd for a desert island, but this has grown on me, and there's plenty of room for expressive contrasts.

Prelude in C sharp minor Op. 3 no. 2...I'm following the Russian music syllabus (as well as Grade 8 ABRSM), and that piece would be year 2 college level. For those who are not familiar with the Russian syllabus: you first have 8 grades followed by 4 years of college, and it's only then that you are able to apply to a music conservatory....

oh, and all the pieces must be memorised! blink.gif To be honest, you can't really play the prelude in C sharp minor without memorisation... smile.gif
