Full Version: Getting Used To Strings?

I'd been playing on an old set of dominants and felt like trying some new strings. I searched every kind and read about all of them and decided on taking some of my violin playing friends' advice and trying d'addario zyex strings.
As my violin teacher hadn't heard of them before, she wanted me to wait until after my exam to put them on. I totally agreed with her.
The arrived today... ph34r.gif I just wanted a quick try... ph34r.gif
I put them on, with every intention of putting my doms back on like tomorrow or something after i'd tried out my new strings.
But now i reeaally like these ones and don't want to take them off ph34r.gif
My exam is in a month. Surely i can get used to them by then? Or is it really a bad idea to put new strings on coming up to my exam?

As far as I know, new strings don't take much getting used to, I should think it would be fine. But if your teacher wants you to wait, then I'd wait.

Keep them on, as long as you're practicing enough. I reckon most strings take 15-20 hours playing to "wear in". Plus new strings will sound better, which is good for an exam!

You can keep the old ones on stand-by as ready broken-in spares in case a string breaks during or shortly before the exam. Certainly a good excuse to keep the new ones on and get them settled in - you wouldn't want to be heading into an exam with no played-in spares. ;-)

Yeah, the A string on my old set looked near to snapping at the bridge anyway!
I'm just really worried my teacher will be mad, or that i ignored her advice ph34r.gif
