Is it usual for a grade 5 player to still be reading treble clef for trombone? I have absolutely no idea myself having never played brass instruments, thanks in advance for your thoughts smile.gif

im no trombone expert, but i think it depends what trombone part you play. In our brass band, the 1st and occaisionally second parts are in treble, and the the bass trombone oviously in bass. I think all our trombonists read both.

I dont think it really matters that you only read treble, but i reckon it would help your musical 'ability' (couldnt think of another word to describe it) if you begin to start learnig to read bass clef as well.

Dont know (gosh ive said that a lot in this post!) is this is any help. Sorry if its not.

Good Luck With The Playing!!!!

Grade 5 is the grade when you usually learn the other clef that you didn't start on...

In the United State I, a jazz trombonist, read Bass Clef as well as the trombones in my Concert Band class. I'm going to assume that your in a british brass/marching band (I think they read treble clef) and while it isn't that odd, I would suggest they learn Tenor and Bass Clef if they are serious about playing trombone and continuing onto it in college.

The Trumpet, French Horn, and Baritone read treble clef, The tubas and Trombone usually read Bass and can go up to Tenor (and in the case of trombones, treble)

But this might just be The United States

My younger brother plays the trombone, & he's on Grade 5. He still reads from the treble clef, and his teacher hasn't expressed any intentions to changing this as yet.
