Hi.

I'm a clarinet player but hope to go into music later in life and as a result am studying piano in an effort to develop a broader musical foundation.

I reached Grade 3 standard after about 9 months of playing and have almost mastered reading bass clef as good as trebel clef but am finding it really hard to progress up to Grade 4/5 as I have a very limited repetoire.

I was wondering, has anyone got any recommendations for a ''complete tutor'' or ''method'' book that goes from about my standard to advanced (or maybe just about grade 6!!!)???

Any suggestions would be VERY helpful as i've come to a very depessing STAND STILL!!! ..thanks in advance anyone... biggrin.gif

If you haven't got Pianist Magazine Then I would urge you to do so, as each month, there are graded pieces (actually they are classed as Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced - though a grade 3+ is required for some of the beginner ones - but not necessarily grade 8 for the advanced ones. Arabesque #1 is in this Months issue - and classed as "intermediate" - though a "Grade 8" by the ABRSM.

In this months issue for example, the beginner pieces are by Bach (Musette BWV anh 126), Mozart (Allegro K3), Beethoven (Sonatina NO 1 WoO Anh 5 - Romance).

Intermediate offerings are from composers by Chopin (nocturne opus post KKIVa NO 16) and so forth. With "Advanced" works from Brahms (Intermezzo op 118 No 2), and Schumann Chamber music piece (Sonata No 1 for Violin and piano (second Movement)

These are great, because with the “accompanying CD”, you get to hear all what’s on offer, and not only that, but the Piano “bit” is muted out in the sonata’s so you can put the CD in your hi-fi and play along to the orchestral background – and sound like a “concert pianist” in your own living room – well that’s the idea I guess

Also in the Magazine, you will get "Method for Beginner". And these vary from month to month on type of instruction given. This month it is "Staccato” with many examples given. Also there is some chord theory, and how to read symbols on sheet music etc (G, DM, AM and so forth) some are elementary, but can offer guidance to the more advanced pupil - for sight reading practice say.

As for books, a quick search on Amazon will come up with many books - too many it seems at first. You can narrow these down though, however, and select with method you would like. There’s too many to mention, so I guess you go look and see what you can find. However, be careful in your search as not to elect for these £30.00+ Video's that offer little more than "how to play the C Scale" - and little more.
