Full Version: What Did Everyone Play For Grade 1?

I played all my grade 1 pieces tonight...I love them so much, nostalgic value! wub.gif I've been feeling 8 years old again ever since. laugh.gif

I did the 1997-2000 syllabus (violin btw), taking the exam in summer 2000 and played:

A1 Stowey - Anon
B1 Andante, No.1 from Very Easy Melodious Exercises in the First Position - Elgar
C3 Hoe Down, from Little Suite No. 3 - Peter Martin

My teacher had to make me do the Elgar (this was my private teacher, but I was also learning in a group with a peri, where everyone else was doing the Elgar and I wanted to do something else), at first i thought it was really boring, but I ended up loving it and also getting 28/30. biggrin.gif

I just thought it would be fun to see if any of us had played the same pieces as each other and what we thought of them.

'Postman Pat' and the 'Blackadder Theme' were on the G1 viola syllabus the last few years! laugh.gif tongue.gif

Much more recent grade 1 for me (at the age of 38, not 8) - from the syllabus that's about to expire:

A2: J'ai Du Bon Tabac (trad. French)
B3: Celtic Song (Peter Martin)
C2: Fiddle Time (David & Kathy Blackwell)

I enjoyed all of them (and actually took some considerable time to choose them over the others in the book as I liked most of the book).

I played Fiddle Time in a Forums Concert shortly after the exam too. biggrin.gif

I loved those pieces. I almost thought of doing Grade 1 just so I could play those to an examiner. The idea of a thirtysomething playing Postman Pat in an exam appeals to my sense of insanity.

March in Canon - David E Stone
Humming Song - Schumann
Valley Song - Kenneth Jones

Like Katyjay, J'ai Du Bon Tabac and Fiddle Time and Ode to Joy (only because I remembered it from when I was little, used to listen to it) smile.gif

What a great thread, I played the exact same pieces as you did, I was 10 when I did the exam smile.gif I love Stowey wub.gif

like you my teacher picked all the pieces, that was just how exams happened in our school

I didn't take Grade one (March this year) because we missed the entry date but I remember there was a waltz?

Sorry - I had borrowed a book so I can't remember the other tunes.

I was quite disappointed to miss it because I wanted the 'full set' of exams laugh.gif party1.gif

I can always go back and do it again in twenty years time.... ph34r.gif

It would certainly have made a change from when I was a teen having to play lots of pieces named after elephants and hippos on the bass.

Lis
Morgan's Munchkin
Oooh...gosh....I did mine in July 2003 and I think I played:

Go From My Window
Song Without Words
and the slightly livlier C piece. Can't remember who they were by though.

Fiddle Time is fun - I remember playing that out of my Fiddle Time Joggers book before I took my grade 1

Oh dear I did this when I was 9 :]
Ahh brings back memories!
I cant remember who wrote them or whatever (c'mon I was 9!) but;

Hoe Down
Stowey
Loch Lomond

And i so nearly failed that I gave up. I was 9 and only just scraped a pass. It completely knocked my confidence sad.gif

Didn't do Gr 1 clari (didn't exist in my day) but did take Gr 1 piano (as a 30 something) and played Creepy Crawlie. Got it out tonight to play!!!
The weird thing is , the composor, Peter Gritton was one of the musicians around in my locality when I grew up... I knew of him (think my big sister might have been his contemporary). I think he was older than me.
Small world eh?
AmandaL
Didn't take Grade 1. Was far too good after just ten lessons that I took Grade 2 wink.gif

I think the list B piece was 'Danny Boy' or some sort of Irish Air. I don't honestly remember what the others were, it's too long ago and I got rid of the music shortly after the exam - recycled to another violin pupil.

As for woodwind, my first clarinet exam was Grade 3. (Neither Grade 1 or Grade 2 existed for any of the woodwind instruments in my day).

Please be kind and tell me the book title and the publisher for Blackadder?
We bought our 10 year old the boxed set of DVDs for his birthday and he'd love to play it.
