Dear all…

I’m a new teacher in theory…my student will have examination on grade 5 (theory) soon but I’m still confuse about the time signature in theory paper grade 5 2005 C. Is it correct if the answer question 1 (a) is C or alla breve? And if we want to add sharp or flat for double whole note (breve) should we put inside the double line or outside the double line? Sorryyy it sounds poor questions but I’m very very confuse about it. blink.gif

Thank you very much smile.gif

Hi,

I may be wrong, as I'm not a teacher or anything, but I am doing grade 5 and therefore have that paper!!

I would have said that for 1a the time signature was 2/2 (or C). And about adding accidentals to a breve...I'm not sure if I've misread the question, but I'd put the accidental outside the double line....

Hope that was of any help, sorry if I've misread your questions or am wrong.

Yes, accidentals go outside the double lines with breves.

I don't know the answer to the other question as I don't have that paper to hand!

It's always better to ask someone if you're unsure about something! smile.gif

C and Alla Breve are different. Alla Breve is 2/2 or C with a vertical line through it. A plain C is 4/4 = common time.

Now a little rant! When I was taught theory over 35 years ago we used to group quavers into crotchets so, in 3/4 a bar of 6 quaver would be written as 3 groups of 2 quavers. These days the rule appears to be 'group as many quavers together as you can. [BTW I'm so glad we don't do the old word-setting of single quavers to each syllable and beaming them only for melismas - phew]

Anyway, there used to be a good way of telling if a piece was 4/4 or 2/2; if one looked at the quavers groups and found 4 beamed together then it was 2/2. I don't think this is quite so cur and dried these days. One would need to look at the context.

The best thing to do is to look at the AB theory guide and do what it says.

Other answers about the breve are correct.

Dear all...

thank you very much for singerpianist, JohnS,bourdon16..

yes, I've looked in AB guide but I think it's not so complete blush.gif

in 2005C no 1a a bar is consist of quaver not, dotted crotchet which tied with dotted crotchet after the first dotted crotchet and quaver rest.

thank you very much smile.gif

I answered the question as 4/4 as in the next bar it goes to 5/4 and then back to 4/4.... unsure.gif

Not sure whether I'm right or not - paper will be marked tomorrow so I can let you know then!
