Hi Digby, couldn't see you at the end and had to dash off, sorry!
Yes, it was a great day. There was an interesting mix of about 15 pianists, 8 flutes, 1 sax, 1 clarinet, 1 trumpet, and 2 cellos (sorry if I've forgotten anyone!) We were taken through a step by step process of copying easy little phrases by singing then playing and developing that into call and response games etc until we were all happily playing 4 to 12 bar improvised solos. It was very inspiring and there were lots of ideas for incorporating these techniques into teaching aural and scales and so on.
I would thoroughly recommend the taster day to anyone - jazz enthusiast or not, and I can't wait for the 4 day course next year. I came home thoroughly inspired and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my first pupil today, a boy who prefers to do everything by ear and who I have had real struggles with over note reading. How happy he will be when I tell him we are going to forget about the dots for the first part of his lesson. I plan to revise his pentatonic scales that have been such a bugbear by busting them up into loads of 2 or 3 note sections and improvising on them, just like we did yesterday.... it will either be one of our best lessons ever, or a complete disaster! (watch this space)
PS We learnt all about some very fancy chords eg half diminished
