Hey
I have just started a course in music at college, I am doing a course called BTec National Diploma year 2 in Classical Music. I am playing grade 5/6ish pieces but I have a bit of a problem. I have never done actual ABRSM exams and during my private piano lessons during the past couple of years, my piano teacher never taught me scales, even though I wanted to. I tried to teach myself but I don't think I am using the right techniques and have possibly picked up some bad habits. Now that I have started college, everyone else who is a first study pianist in my class can do grade 6/7 scales and I feel quite stupid compared to them. I will be getting taught them of my tutor in college some time in the next few weeks ( I have just started college) but can anyone suggest any way's in which I can practise/prepare at home till I can get taught, or of any techniques that may help.
Thanks alot.

If you are starting from scratch with scales, it is realy important to get the fingering right. Practice SPot has a good manual of basic scales showing fingering. Might be a good place to start. See here

Good link but only does harmonic minors, not melodic (so far as I can tell). Better might be to invest a fiver (more or less) in a ABRSM scales book. Check here: ABRSM scales & arpeggios for piano at Amazon

. . . and don't feel stupid. When I returned to piano in February after a 34 year gap I found that my scales and arpeggios were far worse than I might have thought. Seven months on with almost daily practice and things are better!
