Hi, I'm looking into getting a silent brass mute for my trumpet to go to uni with, so I can practice in my room without disturbing people, and also so I can practice late at night/early in the morning.
Does anyone know if these are any good/worth getting? And also does anyone know where I can get one for less than £90 including the headphones etc?
Thanks

hi
my teacher has one for practicing in music classrooms with a class. i think they are really good, but it doesnt make it totally silent. you still hear a slight noise.
sorry, cant help you where to buy one, but i would say it's quite a good investment!
hope this helps

They seem to come up regularly on ebay.

They are very good,
There is some sound but its nothing really, it also sounds great through the headphones.
Beware, it can make you sound a lot better than you really are!
The answer to where to pick one up cheap,
EBAY!

I have one for trumpet and find that it makes my trumpet quite hard to play, its a bizarre feeling! You can also mix in a music player into the personal studio and balance them - quite good!
I also have a cheap version, which is just a mute with a stethescope coming out the end - they are painful for any length of time!

No harder than using a practice mute, actually helps open your air ways. I have found mine very good although i hardly ever have time to practice these days.
Look on ebay there are some resonable ones there.

i bought one a few years ago to practice in hotels on tour. I just bought the mute though, it plays in tune and you can play through all of the range. I don't think it's worth buying the rest of it, it will only make you sound different/better artificially.
The best way is to get your neighbours used to you practicing without a mute...

Personally, I don't like Silent Brass - too much resistance to the air-flow. At home, I use a thing called the Sssshhhh Mute, which is just like a plastic straight mute, but with a hole+tube in the end, and complete seal inside the bell. Really deadens the sound. I can practise at any time of the night, and the neighbours can't hear me at all, despite my house being in a terrace and having thin walls! Packers of Tauton stock the mute at about £25, I think.

Ive heard of them too
Dave Ballard sells them. Not quite as cheap as briantrumpet said but very very quick delivery.
