From ABRSM Grade 7 practice paper, 2006: Pg 15

4C a 4-3 suspension in the supertonic minor key in the keyboard part: I put Bar 10, but I'm not so sure about it. Not quite sure what the '4-3' is meant by.

4D a harmonic interval of a minor 10th between the outside notes of the keyboard part: I didn't even attempt! I dont understand really. I know what a compound interval is, but when it says 'the outside notes?' What am I looking at?

Page 16

Q5a: an inner dominant pedal lasting five bars: I put the brackets over Corni 2 in Eb, first 5 bars.

Many thanks for your help in advanced!

I don't have the paper but

an example of a 4-3 suspension is if you have a Cmajor chord you would have an F moving down to an E somewhere in the chord...(F is the 4 and E the 3) The F would have been present in the previous chord too as the preparation for the suspension.

The outside parts on a piano score are the lowest and highest notes.

Jenny - do you have a book to help you? Harmony in Practice is very good for the higher grade exams and gives you lots of practice with this sort of thing.

sbhoa got there before me and gave a very musch more concise answer than I would have managed!!

Thanks for both your helps! I dont think I got the suspension question correct. I will look at it again!

I was looking at getting the Music Theory in Practice Grade 7 (ABRSM) to help me.
Is that the Anna Butterworth Harmony in Practice Textbook you are reffering to SueHM?
SueHM
No, this is what I'm talking about. It's not cheap, but it is very comprehensive and has more than you need for grade 7. It doesn't help much with composition but it's great for harmony and analysis, figured bass and all that sort of thing. There is a separate answer book that I found invaluable for working out where I'd gone wrong! You might not need that if your teacher is prepared to help, but given how time consuming it all is, your money might be better spent on the book, rather than lesson time. You can sign up as a teacher and get 10% discount at Musicroom is you spend over (?)£20ish.

Thanks for your advice Sue! That book is definately written by Anna Butterworth though (ABRSM Publishing)! tongue.gif

Hi, me again, you do seem to be having some problems with this question. smile.gif

I put bar 11 for the 4 -3 suspension - bit difficult to explain to explain which notes, but will try. The right hand of the piano part, last 2 notes in the inner part - E followed by D# against the two Bs in the left hand.

4D - the outside notes just means the bottom note and the top note. So they're asking for the interval between the bottom note of the keyboard part and the top note of the keyboard part. I had bar 10 for this - the 4th quaver in the bass and the G semiquaver above it - there might be another one somewhere else too.

Q5a I put bars 1 - 5 too.

Harmony in Practice is a very good book. I also use Practice in Music theory by Josephine Koh - one for each grade, and Roy Wilkinson's ABC of Harmony, and ABC of Theory.

I wanted to understand what I was doing rather than just some tricks to pass the exam.
And my teacher didn't enter anyone who was not scoring consisten 80+ on past papers by the entry date.
jennthesaxplayer
At this level you cant trick it! You either know it or you dont blink.gif
