which CD?

There are lots of music books you can buy which come with CDs that contain rhythm section backing for you to practice improvisation. Best known are probably the Jamey Aebersold series (literally hundreds to choose from). Hal Leonard also have some good ones.

I haven't seen any where you buy CDs without the books. You kind of need the books so that you have a record of the chord changes, form etc.

There is a great series of traditional jazz about 8 CD's produced by Keith Nichols, with chord charts.

You could also look at investing in Band-in-a-Box - its brilliant - you can type in your own chord sequences.

I have a few Jamey Aebersold and Hal Leonard ones and they have backing only tracks.

The Hal Leonard ones are quite good because each song has two tracks - one with the melody playing (which can also have the piano or bass faded out) the other without the melody(just the rhythm section)

If it's any help, there are a few impro tracks that I've done here:

They were done with Band-in-a-Box, which is absolutely brilliant for doing this sort of thing. The tracks include Blues in (concert) B flat, D flat, F, II-V-I in all keys (starting in Bb, and going up by semitone each time - a really good way to practise all your scales & chords!), Autumn Leaves in D minor (I think), Flintstones in E flat ('rhythm' changes) and Milestones. Do let me know if they're the sort of thing you're after.
