I've never posted in this forum before but I just thought I'd say I love percussion, especially when the most amazing sounds can be made with the simplest of instruments. At the jazzfest I went to at the weekend, the percussionist had a washboard on a stand which was also fitted with a tiny cymbal, a bell and a wood block. It was so cool! I know this is a skill you percussionists probably take for granted, but I thought it was amazing that she could stroke the rhythm on the washboard with one hand whilst the other hand was tapping hemidemisemi-lotsofemi-quavers with the other hand. I would never be able to co-ordinate my hands like that biggrin.gif

Oh forgot to say, she had a drum kit as well, which also sounded pretty good!

Here's a picture of the band anyway, the Red Hot Reedwarmers Les Jazzticots, just thought I'd share all this with you percussionists biggrin.gif

Almost like the olde music hall 'Any old iron, any old iron ?' howDoYouDo.gif with ole washer board.

Was at a concert by Brian Kennedy - truly gifted Belfast Born singer, a while back. He tours light - playing guitar himself and usually accompanied by his faithful double bassist. Anyway..... also had a drummer this time. This guy played..... a wooden box. You know the type of box your dad would have polished your shoes on when you were a kid? Sounded a little like an irish bodhran - really effective!

I've just looked properly at the picture, what is the guy in the centre playing? I thought it was a flute but have just noticed the mouthpiece.

Just realised it could be a Soprano Sax. Is that right?

I put the name of the band down incorrectly in my first post - they're called Les Jazzticots (I got mixed up with the Red Hot Reedwarmers cos some of them play in both bands). And I've found some Youtube clips of Les Jazzticots playing:

THIS CLIP shows the washboard being played with the reeds players on alto sax and clarinet

THIS CLIP shows the washboard with clarinet and soprano sax

I like it! The wonders of simplicity!
