Hi all!
Anyone know of any jazz summer schools starting soon? Have you been to one that you can especially recomend?

Thanks for the information!

Hi,

Try googling 'jazzwise' - the site usually has this sort of information.

Try www.jazzinlondon.net

The last page usually has details of summer schools, not all (or in fact any) based in London!

Thanks for the links!

There are some great schools here, I like the sound of the one in Devon or going off to France.

Just came across this one: www.Mehrclef.com which holds Jazz Residential courses in Guildford Surey in August. One week for adults £595 and one week specifically for young people aged 14 - 18 £540. It looks pricy but bear in mind that you get bed and board as well as your tuition.

The only gripe I had was the additonal £30 charge for 'Chaperoning' under 16s and you have to bring your own manuscript paper!

Its the little extras that make the courses pleasant. Free (alright included) paper, mug, pencil, rubber, ruler make kids feel good. The yanks are so far ahead in this - even the free course Tshirt is considered an essential part of the advertising campaign.

Just wondering whether your daughter did this course Ayshah? I did the adults course enjoyed a lot and learnt loads from it. I'm definitely intending to go back next year.

Am slightly ashamed blush.gif (hangs head). Just after I posted my gripe above I got an email from them offering her a bursary for half the fees!! (they still had vacancies - wonder why?)

Sadly I couldnt take them up as other plans had been made. We can only manage on music summer course so she went to EYSM in Herts. Mostly classical, as opposed to jazz as such, but it had a improvisation session for an hour every day & a jazz band. We would seriously think about Guildford next year. Glad to hear you benefitted from it.

Anyone went on the youth one?

I think they probably still had vacancies because this year was the first time they had split the courses into adults and <19. On the adult course there were quite a few who had been on the course last year when it was mixed ages. I was really impressed by the way things were organised and by how good the tutors were. For me, they managed to strike the right balance between pushing you that little bit further and being supportive so it wasn't too scary. I'm hopeful that following some of the advice I was given will help me to progress in the next year.
