I got a violin about 3 weeks ago biggrin.gif Venturing out of my woodwind roots haha. It's my 8th instrument so it wasn't hard to learn note fingerings and pick up (not literally! :s) and stuff but i don't have a teacher yet so i was wondering if you guys could give me some tips? I can play some difficult pieces (that's not to say i play them well xD) but my tone is pretty umm not nice (as are all beginner violinists xD). Also it's quite hard to pitch notes - i'm always really sharp or flat like a semitone haha. That's probably something that comes with practise though right?
See when i search google for flute tips i get tons of sites. Search it for violin tips and there's hardly anything! So i thought i'd ask you string players for some general tone/technique/playing/whatever tips biggrin.gif

Wait until you get a teacher is my only advice, you will get into so many bad habbits even if you just play about on your violin smile.gif

Best tip I can give you if you haven't played a bowed string instrument before is to get a teacher.

Hi there and welcome to the violin forumy bitty thing!

I started the violin last year by playing around with my Dad's violin. As a musician already I was playing tunes really quickly and rather pleased with myself but then I did get a teacher and wow, I was really getting rather a lot wrong!

It's a very difficult thing to try to play without a good teacher to start you off because there's lots you can hold/press/bend in the wrong place and still get a tune (of sorts biggrin.gif )

Do you know a violinist you could ask to give you a help until school starts again? Or can you contact the school teacher and ask for a single lesson in the summer to get you started? It honestly would help and you'll progress much faster in the long run.

Good luck smile.gif

Thanks for the advice smile.gif
I think music lessons in school are over until September now (well woodwind definately is), but my best friend actually plays violin so i may follow your advice and get her to help me xD she did come play some duets with me the day after i got my violin but she struggled as she got to grade 5 some years ago and quit, and although she does love violin she never plays it. She'd still remember where to tell me if im going wrong i hope then xD
