Full Version: What Does This Question Mean?

I am working through a Grade 7 ABRSM practice paper, and a question came up like this:

**Write out in full the right-hand part of bar 8, as you think it should be played.

The thing that is confusing me, is the fact that bar 8 is written in! So I'm not sure what the question is asking me to do. Do I just copy the bar out exactly, in the blank space which has been provided for me?

Many thanks

This sort of question is usually about ornaments. Are there ornaments (trills, turns etc.) in this bar? So instead of notating a trill you would write out exactly how it is played in demi/hemi demi quavers or whatever.

Can you be more specific about where it is. Is it the 'Big 7' book or a past paper or what?

Yes! There is a trill present at the start of the bar. Above the tr, there is also a natural sign directly above it. What does that mean?

It is the ABRSM Grade 7 practice paper from 2006.

I'm presuming that the note you would trill with is sharpened or flattened somewhere in the same bar, or in the whole piece, so that natural sign is telling you to play the normal note - without a sharp or flat.

Just read ABRSM Part 1 guide to theory on trills, and says that:

''Notice that an accidental required by the upper or lower note may be written above or below the ornament.''

However in my practice paper, I have a Bb to a F sharp, then back to the Bb. The ornament is written above the first note (Bb). I'm in the key of C minor. So what do I do about the F sharp?

Its ok, found the answer now with further readng!!

Many thanks for everyone's help smile.gif
